Nearly half a million people have been forced to leave their homes since military operations began to retake the city of Mosul in northern Iraq. The UN estimates that as many as 500,000 people still remain in ISIL-controlled parts of western Mosul.
A spokesman for the US-led coalition says there are fewer than 1,000 ISIL fighters left in Mosul, adding that the dense urban terrain has made operations more difficult. Iraqi security forces retook eastern Mosul from ISIL in January, and continue fighting for control of the western half of the city.
