There are thousands of species of butterflies found around the world.
世界上有成千上万种蝴蝶。
And they come in all sorts of different colors and patterns.
它们有各种不同的颜色和图案。
Their patterns are created by two different ways. So first of all, they have something called melanin.
它们的图案是由两种不同的方式形成的。首先，它们有一种叫做黑色素的东西。
Now, melanin is a compound that is inside your own bodies as well,
黑色素是一种存在于你体内的化合物，
and that's what gives you a nice tan or some freckles on your face in the summertime.
它是让你在夏天晒出漂亮的古铜色或脸上出现雀斑的原因。
And in our butterflies, it gives them their brown and yellow patterns, but they have something else.
而在蝴蝶身体当中，黑色素会让它们形成棕色和黄色的图案，不过它们体内还有别的东西。
So you have probably seen some really brightly colored butterflies in your time.
所以你可能见过一些颜色非常鲜艳的蝴蝶。
And those bright colors don't come from melanin.
这些鲜艳的颜色不是来自黑色素。
Butterflies have got loads of tiny scales on their wings.
蝴蝶的翅膀上有很多细小的鳞片。
And what happens is as the light shines through those scales, it bounces around,

it reflects off all the surfaces and it creates different colors.

So if you've ever been blowing bubbles out in the garden, you'll see that sometimes the bubbles can shine different colors in the sunlight.

And that's exactly what's happening in the butterflies wings.
