In language, we say that stress is saying something in a louder or higher pitch.

Right, and we often stress syllables.

A syllable is any one of the parts into which a word is divided when it is spoken.

A syllable generally has a vowel or a vowel and one or more consonant sounds.

In words with two syllables, Americans often stress verbs and nouns in regular ways.

Right! In two-syllable words, we often stress the first syllable in nouns and the second syllable in verbs.

For example, the noun produce.

Right! Common nouns such as building, window, or garden all have stress on the first part of the word--they are all nouns with two syllables.

But remember: the idea we are talking about today does not necessarily hold true for longer words--words with more than two syllables.
