Gan Yu was working at the Wandong hydropower station in Luding County when the earthquake occurred.

He helped his colleague to release water from the dam, to protect villages from flooding.

But while trying to leave the area, he became exhausted and weak and decided to wait where he was, as his colleague left to look for help.

His colleague was found three days later, but Gan Yu waited for 17 days.

Myopia made it difficult for him to find his way and he had to rely on spring water and wild fruits to survive.

When he was found, he was extremely thin and covered in bruises.

Gan Yu has been transferred to West China Hospital in Sichuan's capital Chengdu for further treatment.
