A Dog was crossing a plank bridge over a stream with a piece of meat in his mouth,
一只狗嘴里衔着一块肉，正在走过河上方独木桥，
when he happened to see his own reflection in the water.
当他偶然看到自己映在水中的倒影时，
He thought it was another dog with a piece of meat twice as big;
他以为这是另一只狗，身上还有一块跟他现在这块相比大一倍的肉；
so he let go his own, and flew at the other dog to get the larger piece.
于是，他放开自己的手，朝另一只狗扑去，想抓住那块更大的。
But, of course,
但是，这结果也显而易见，
all that happened was that he got neither;
最后他两个都没有得到；
for one was only a shadow, and the other was carried away by the current.
因为一个只是影子，另一个又被水流冲走了。
