After some time, their mother sent the children into the wood to collect fagots.
过了一段时间，母亲让孩子们到树林里去拾柴火。
They found there a large tree, which had been cut down and lay on the ground,
她们发现那里有一棵大树倒在地上，
and by the trunk something was jumping up and down, but they could not tell what it was.
在树干旁边有什么东西在跳上跳下，但她们不知道那是什么。
As they came nearer they saw that it was a dwarf with an old withered face, and a snow-white beard a yard long.
等她们走近一看，原来是一个小矮人，面色枯黄，雪白的胡子有一码长。
The end of the beard was stuck fast in a cleft in the tree, and the little fellow jumped about like a dog on a rope, and did not know how to help himself.
他的胡子一端正牢牢地卡在树缝里，他像一条拴在绳子上的狗，跳来跳去，不知所措。
He stared at the girls with his fiery red eyes, and screamed out: "Why do you stand there? Can't you come and render me some assistance?"
他怒气冲冲的盯着姑娘们，尖声叫道:“还站在那干嘛?你们就不能来帮我一下吗?”
"What is the matter with you, little man?" asked Rose-red.
“你怎么了，小矮人?”红玫问道。
"Stupid little goose!" answered the dwarf;
“笨蛋,多嘴的傻瓜!”小矮人骂道；
"I wanted to chop the tree, so as to have some small pieces of wood for the kitchen; we only want little bits;
“我想砍掉这棵树，为厨房准备一些小块的木材；我们只想要一些小块的;
with thick logs the small quantity of food that we cook for ourselves--we are not, like you, great greedy people--burns directly.
用厚厚的圆木给自己做少量食物，我们可不像你们这些贪婪的家伙——会用它直接燃烧。
I had driven the wedge well in, and it was all going on right, but the detestable wood was too smooth, and sprang out unexpectedly;
本来我把楔子插得很好，且一切都进行得很顺利，但那块可恶的木头太滑了，突然弹了出来。
and the tree closed up so quickly that I could not pull my beautiful white beard out; now it is sticking there, and I can't get away.
接着树缝很快就闭合了，我美丽的白胡子却拔不出来了；现在它被卡在那里，我也走不了。
There, you foolish, soft, milk-faces, you are laughing and crying out: 'How ugly you are! how ugly you are!'"
你们两个痴痴呆呆、油嘴滑舌、奶油粉面的毛丫头却在发笑:‘你们多难看呀!你们真丑!’”
The children took a great deal of trouble, but they could not pull the beard out; it stuck too fast.
孩子们费了很大的劲，就是拔不出胡子来。胡子卡在里面太紧了。
"I will run and fetch somebody," said Rose-red.
“我去找个帮手吧。”红玫说。
"You great ninny!" snarled the dwarf, "to want to call more people; you are too many for me now. Can't you think of anything better?"
“你这个没脑子的傻瓜!”小矮人吼道，“还想叫什么人。你们俩已经够烦人的了。难道就没有别的办法吗?”
"Only don't be impatient," said Snow-white. "I have thought of something;"
“办法就是耐心点，”白雪说。“我想到了一个方法;”
and she took her little scissors out of her pocket, and cut the end of the beard off.
于是她从口袋里拿出一把小剪刀，一刀把胡子的那头剪断了。
As soon as the dwarf felt himself free he seized a sack filled with gold that was sticking between the roots of the tree;
小矮人脱身后，一把抓起藏在树根处的口袋，袋中装满了金子。
pulling it out, he growled to himself: "You rude people, to cut off a piece of my beautiful beard! May evil reward you!"
他把胡子拔了出来，口中嘟囔道:“你们这些粗鲁的家伙，把我漂亮的胡子给剪了!你们不会有好报的!”
Then he threw his sack over his shoulders, and walked away without once looking at the children.
然后他把麻袋扛在肩上，看也不看孩子们一眼就走了。
