Hello! I'm Emma from mmmEnglish!

大家好!我是Emma,来自mmmEnglish!
I've made several videos about English idioms
我己经制作了几期关于英语习语的视频
and that's because they're a really important part of English.
这是因为习语真的是英语中很重要的一部分。
They're expressions that come up all the time
这些表达会一直出现
in both written English and spoken English,
不论是在书面语还是口语中,
in formal and informal conversations.
它们也会出现在正式和非正式对话中。
When used correctly, especially in an English exam, they show creativity and they demonstrate a control over the language.
正确使用习语,特别是在考试中,会表现出你的创造力以及对语言的掌控力。
Now most idioms don't make a lot of sense, literally.
现在大部分习语在字面上和实际意义上不同。
Often you can't just look at the words and try to guess the meaning.
通常你不能只是看着这词汇,揣测含义。
The meaning is often something completely different to the individual words in the idiom.
习语的含义通常与习语中的单个词汇的含义不同。
So you need to learn the meaning of these idioms separately
所以,你需要分别学习这些习语的含义,
which might sound like more work and it might sound stressful,
这听起来好像工作量很大,让人有很大压力,
but I've got a really great tip to share with you today to help you remember these idioms and to start using them more in conversation.
但是我今天要和你分享一个很棒的小技巧,帮助你记住这些习语,在交谈中多多使用它们。
So, you ready?
所以,你准备好了吗?
This is the advice that I give all of my students.
这是我给所有学生的建议。
When you hear a new idiom
当你听到一个习语,
and you learn the meaning,
并学习其含义时,
think about a situation in your own life where the meaning of this idiom is relevant.
想想在你自己的生活中遇到的和这个习语的含义相关的场景。
So let's use a really common idiom as an example,
所以让我们以一个常见的习语为例,
'a blessing in disguise'
“因祸得福”('a blessing in disguise')
which is used when something seems bad or unlucky at first
这个习语用于,某事起先看起来十分糟糕,或者不幸,
but it results in something good happening later.
但是它随后产生了很棒的结果。
So just to be clear,
说的明确一点,
disguise is something that someone wears to hide themselves,
人们会穿着“伪装(disguise)”来隐藏自己
so a blessing in disguise is a good thing that is hidden, got it?
所以“因祸得福(a blessing in disguise)”就是隐藏的好事,你明白了吗?
Okay, so to help you remember this idiom and this is something that you should do every time you learn a new idiom,
好的,所以为了帮你们记住这个习语,这也是你们每次在学习一个习语时应该做的事,
is think about how it relates to you.
就是要想想它和你有什么关系。
Think about an event or a moment in your life,
想一下你生活中发生的一件事或一个时刻,

where something happened that seemed bad at the time

某件事在发生时很糟糕
but it resulted in something good happening later.
但是它随后产生了好的结果。
So let's use an example to explain.
所以让我们用例子来解释一下。
My best friend Amy wanted to study medicine
我最好的朋友想要学习医学,
and her parents really wanted her to study medicine too
她的父母也很想让她学习医学,
but she didn't get accepted at the University she wanted to study at.
但是她没有被自己想去的那所学校录取。
That's bad, right?
这很糟糕,对吧?
She was really upset about it at the time
她当时真的很沮丧,
but a few months later, she got an opportunity to volunteer with an aid organisation in Africa.
但是几个月后,她得到了一个机会,去非洲一个救援组织当志愿者。
So she thought 'Why not?'
她想到,“为什么不去呢?”
She went out and went on a big adventure.
她去了非洲,并开始了一场大冒险。
But she loved the work that she was doing there, helping refugees to apply for visas
但是她很喜欢在那里的工作,帮助难民申请签证,
so that they could start new lives in other countries.
这样他们可以在其他国家开始新生活。
And she was really good at this job,
她真的很擅长这份工作,
she instantly found her true passion in life.
她马上找到了生活的热情。
So over time, she was promoted within the organisation and now she's the CEO!
时间流逝,她在组织内不断晋升,现在成为了首席执行官!
So, when the university didn't accept her for the degree in medicine,
所以,当那所大学没有接受她攻读医学时,
that was a blessing in disguise
她就因祸得福了(a blessing in disguise)
because she probably would never have found her true passion
因为她可能永远无法找到真正的激情所在,
if she just went to university and studied medicine like her parents wanted.
如果她去了大学,并向她父母期望的那样学习医学。
Now, can you think of an example from your life where this idiom is relevant?
现在,你可以想到你生活中和这个习语相关的例子吗?
I want you to write it down because this is going to help you remember how to use this idiom.
我想让你写下来,因为这会帮助你记住如何使用这个习语。
And you can write your sentence in the comment under this video if you want me to check it for you.
你可以把你的句子写在视频下方的评论区里,如果你想让我帮你检查的话。
Let's try another example now,
现在让我们试试另一个例子,
'the best of both worlds'
“两全其美(the best of both worlds)”
so this idiom is used when you can enjoy the advantages or the benefits of two different things at the same time.
所以这个习语可以用于,当你同时可以享受两个不同事物的优点和好处。
My mum used to live in the city,
我妈妈过去住在城市里,
it was close to her work and she loved going to the theatre and galleries in her free time
那里离她的工作很近,她很喜欢闲暇时去剧院和美术馆。
but now that she's retired,
但是现在她退休了,
she's moved to a small town by the beach
搬到了海边小镇,
and she really loves it.
她真的喜欢那里。
It's quiet, it's peaceful, she's got some good friends there.
那里安静,平和,她在那有一些好朋友。
But she misses going to the theatre and seeing shows every week, like she used to,
但是她真的很想念像过去那样每周去剧院看表演的生活,
it takes her over an hour to drive to the city so she doesn't go there very often now.
她要开车一个多小时到达城市,所以她并不会常去。
But recently, my mum bought a small apartment right in the middle of the city.
但是最近,我妈妈在市中心买了一个小公寓。
So now she's got the best of both worlds,
所以她现在两全其美了(the best of both worlds),
the peaceful relaxing beach lifestyle,
可以过着和平安逸的生活方式,
but then when things seem a little quiet,
但是觉得生活过于安静时,
she can drive to her apartment in the city
她可以驾车去城市的公寓,
and see some shows and visit the gallery.
看看表演,看看画展。
She's got the best of both worlds.
她两全其美啦(the best of both worlds)
So what about you?
那么你呢?
Can you think of a situation in your life where this idiom is relevant?
所以你能想到生活中和这个习语相关的场景吗?
A time when you had the best of both worlds.
你能够两全其美(the best of both worlds)的时候。
Again, tell me about it in the comments, I want to read it!
在评论区告诉我吧,我想看看。
