Dialogue 1
Jingjing: Well, Mark, it's that time of year again: time to reflect and think about what to do better next year.
Mark: This year just flew by. I think, 10 years from now, I won't have any memories of 2019, except for news stories and world events.
Jingjing: Is that a good thing or a bad thing?
Mark: Couldn't it be both? 2019 definitely could have been a more exciting year. But, I got rid of some bad habits and saved quite a lot of money in the last 12 months.
Jingjing: It doesn't sound like you have any regrets. What would have made this year more memorable?
Mark: Travel always does that for me—and of course climbing a mountain worth mentioning. Producing a good piece of writing, or reading a great book—those would be close seconds.
Jingjing: Everybody talks about travel that way. I guess you can't have your cake and eat it too. Either you earn money and save it, or you have a memorable trip, right?
Mark: Yeah, especially now that I only have off during China's golden weeks, ha ha.
Jingjing: You've told me that your last few trips weren't so well-planned—but that you got lucky and found some pretty cool places to explore. But I never asked you what you envision as a memorable trip.
Mark: That's a good question. My answer is going to sound kind of cliché though: Paris.
Jingjing: You've never been?
Mark: Nope. My parents took me to Europe when I was a kid, and we skipped it. I'd like to take my wife there, rent a sports car, and drive around the city for a day.
Jingjing: Where'd you get that idea?
Mark: It's from a classic rock song, “The Eyes of Lucy Jordan.”
Jingjing: You mean, “The Ballad of Lucy Jordan,” don't you? I remember that line about Paris. It sounded kinda like a little girl's dream.
Mark: Yeah, that's the one. So, in the next few years, I hope to make the reservations myself and go with my wife on that memorable trip!
Jingjing: I hope you will. It doesn't sound too difficult to arrange.

Dialogue 2
Jingjing: Mark, can you guess what my thoughts about 2019 and plans for 2020 are?
Mark: Well, I know you've been doing the same series of Going for Gold shows for a few years now. Then again, you don't seem like the kind of person who gets tired of things too quickly and is always looking for something new. I think you're going to have to tell me.
Jingjing: You're right. I'm happy with the broadcasting work I do, and passionate about making it better. Actually, there's not anything burning in my heart when it comes to work. Of course, if someone put a new project on my desk, I'd either reject it or throw myself into it. That's how I roll.
Mark: I know, Jingjing. So, tell me what you think would be a cool thing to have accomplished by this time next year.
Jingjing: I think it'd be cool to become an athletic person.
Mark: Don't you go to the gym two or three times a week? And you have great habits. I think you're in good health overall. Am I right?
Jingjing: Kind of. But I remember last spring, for almost a month, I was too busy to do any exercise. I started feeling burned out. Then, when I did make it back to the gym, it was really hard for me to get into it. I felt like I'd gotten totally out of shape within those few short weeks.
Mark: I hear you. When I was in college, I only needed to think about the gym and muscles would grow.
Jingjing: Don't remind me! So, I think this year is a turning point. I could be extraordinarily healthy for the rest of my life, or have acceptable health and more problems than I expect as the years wear on.
Mark: Wow, it's good that you're thinking about that. Next time I see you will be 2020. I'll remember to ask you about your fitness program.
Jingjing: Thanks, Mark. I'm telling as many people as possible, though not trying to show off too early. That'll keep me motivated.
Mark: Just tell one person. If you have an enemy, a rival, or even just someone who seems like they don't believe in you, tell that one person. Then they'll always ask you, in kind of a mocking way. That will make you take action, because you don't want that one guy to have an edge on you.
Jingjing: That's why I'm telling you, Mark.
Mark: Wait, what now?! Oh, you're joking. Ha ha!
Jingjing: Well, in all seriousness, I don't have any rivals. No one comes to mind, anyway, even though I know what kind of person you're describing. That's a good piece of advice, actually.
Mark: Thanks, but I can't take credit for it. It comes from a success expert named Anthony Robbins.
Jingjing: Tony Robbins—yeah, I remember you talking about him before.
Mark: Yep. He's known for good advice. Anyway, see you in 2020, Jingjing!
Jingjing: See you next year, Mark!
