Today we'll go over how to use the subjunctive to express urgency or importance.
But since we need to hurry, here is one common structure of the subjunctive: Verb + that + object + simple verb.
I advise that you hire a lawyer.
The second form of subjunctive uses: It is + adjective + that + object + simple verb.
It is important that she arrive on time.
Using the subjunctive is a good way to be polite when telling someone what to do.
The subjunctive is formal and diplomatic.
So instead of saying:
Stop slurping your soup!
You could say:
I suggest that you wait until the soup has chilled.
Kaveh, did we miss anything?
Ah, yes! It is essential that you remember this:
There is no third person –s in the subjunctive. You can't say:
It is important that she reads the book.
It is important that she reads the book.(错误用法)
You have to say:
It is important that she read the book.
Usually the person using the subjunctive has power over the listener.
Like a mother speaking to a child or a boss speaking to an employee. It's a polite way to give a command.
