Santa Claus: The True Story

I remember my first Christmas party with GrandmaI was just a kidI remember tearing1) across town on my bike to visit her on the day my big sister dropped the bomb:“There is no Santa Claus,”she jeered.“ Even dummies2) know that.”

My grandma was not the gushy3) kindnever had beenI fled to her that day because I knew she would be straight with meI knew Grandma always told the truthand I knew that the truth always went down a whole lot easier when swallowed with one of her worldfamous cinnamon4) buns

Grandma was homeand the buns were still warmBetween bitesI told her everythingShe was ready for me.“No Santa Claus.”She snorted.“Ridiculous5). Don't believe itThat rumor6) has been going around for yearsand it makes me madplain madNowput on your coatand let's go.”

GoGo whereGrandma?”I askedI hadn't even finished my second cinnamon bun

Whereturned out to be Kerby's General Storethe one store in town that had a little bit of just about everythingAs we walked through its doorsGrandma handed me ten dollarsThat was a bundle in those days.“Take this money and buy something for someone who needs itI'll wait for you in the carThen she turned and walked out of Kerby's

I was only eight years oldI'd often gone shopping with my motherbut never had I shopped for anything all by myselfThe store seemed big and crowdedfull of people scrambling to finish their Christmas shoppingFor a few moments I just stood thereconfusedclutching that tendollar billwondering what to buyand who on earth to buy it for

I thought of everybody I knewmy familymy friendsmy neighborsthe kids at schooland the people who went to my churchI was just about thought outwhen I suddenly thought of Bobbie DeckerHe was a kid with bad breath and messy hairand he sat right behind me in MrsPollack's second grade class

Bobbie Decker didn't have a coatI knew that because he never went out for recess during the winterHis mother always wrote a notetelling the teacher that he had a coughbut all we kids knew that Bobbie Decker didn't have a coughand he didn't have a coatI fingered the tendollar bill with growing excitementI would buy Bobbie Decker a coatI settled on7) a red corduroy8) one that had a hood to itIt looked real warmand he would like that

Is this a Christmas present for someone?” the lady behind the counter asked me kindlyas I laid my ten dollars down

Yes,”I replied shyly.“It's...for Bobbie.”

The nice lady smiled at meI didn't get any changebut she put the coat in a bag and wished me a Merry Christmas

That eveningGrandma helped me wrap the coat in Christmas paper and ribbonsand write,“To BobbieFrom Santa Clauson itGrandma said that Santa always insisted on secrecyThen she drove me over to Bobbie Decker's houseexplaining as we went that I was now forever officially one of Santa's helps

Grandma parked down the street from Bobbie's houseand she and I crept noiselessly and hid in the bushes by his front walkThen Grandma gave me a nudge9).“ All rightSanta Claus,”she whispered,“get going.”

I took a deep breathdashed for his front doorthrew the present down on his steppounded his doorbell and flew back to the safety of the bushes and GrandmaTogether we waited breathlessly in the darkness for the front door to openFinally it didand there stood Bobbie

Forty years haven't dimmed the thrill of those moments spent shiveringbeside my grandmain Bobbie Decker's bushesThat nightI realized that t hose awful rumors about Santa Claus were just what Grandma said they wereridiculousSanta was alive and welland we were on his team
