HOW DID YOU LIKE THE PERFORMANCES？
A: How did you like the English evening organized by the first-year students?
B: Very much indeed. I thought some of the items were wonderful.
A: Which did you like best?
B: Well, the group singing was good, and the story-telling was also interesting. And I especially liked the poem recited by that girl in jeans. She's got such good pronunciation!
A: How about the play put on by Class Six? I thought it quite a success. Their intonation was a bit faulty here and there, but the acting was good. They certainly did an excellent job.
B: I agree with you. And they wrote the play themselves, you know.

A：六班表演的戏剧怎么样？我认为很成功。他们的语调不时有点毛病，但是表演得很好。他们的确演得不错。
B：我同意。而且你知道，那个剧是他们自己写的呢。
NOTES TO THE TEXT
Before long they were good friends and got married.
before long是“不久”的意思。英文中表示“不久”的说法还有：
It won't be long before ... 不用多久，为期不远（指将来发生的事）
It was not long before ... 不久（指过去发生的事）
before long既可以指将来，即It won't be long before...，也可以指过去，即It was not long before ...，例如：
The class will be over before long. 快要下课了。
We shall see the film before long. 过不多久，我们就能看上那部电影。
Before long the Chinese people will become well off. 用不了多久，中国人民就会富裕起来。
Before long everyone in the village came to know him. 不久，全村人都逐渐了解他了。
Everything was fine until one day they found they had spent all their money.
until是“直到……为止”的意思，和till意思一样，两者可以换用。但是必须记住以下两点：
(1)在句首时或在正式用语中，多用until。
(2)在选用时，要考虑英语的表达习惯及语句平衡，如在此句中It was not until... that ... 一般都用until，不用till。
until和till可以作连词和介词用，例如：
Until when (Until what time) shall I wait for him? 我将等他到何时为止？(until是介词，在句首的时候一般都用until)
We worked from 8 o'clock in the morning till (until) 10 o'clock in the evening that day. 那天我们从早上八点一直工作到晚上十点。（这里可以用until代替till，作介词用。）
We went on working until after midnight. 我们一直工作到午夜以后。（这里until也是介词）
I shall be here till you come. 我将在这里待到你来。（till是连词）
Would you please not to read the text until after you have listened to the tape. 请您在听了磁带以后再看课文。（until是连词，用在否定句中时一般译为“直到……才……”）
He won't arrive in Beijing until Friday. 他周五才到北京。
It was not until the teacher came in that we began to practise English. 直到老师进来，我们才开始练习口语。
Not until about 10 o'clock last night did the rain stop. 昨夜十点左右雨才停。（否定词在句首时，后面主、谓语要颠倒。）
从以上例句可以看出，until后面可以跟表示时间意义的副词以及副词短语、介词短语，甚至可以用时间状语从句作它的介词宾语和介词宾语从句。另外，当until用在否定句当中的时候，和中文的表达习惯很不一样，学习当中要加以注意。
