83.导演新秀

When Gary submitted his work to the film selection committee for the fine arts festival, he had no expectations.
当加里把他的作品提交给美术节电影评选委员会时，他并没有抱太大的希望。

Now he had to fly to their city for an interview.
现在他要坐飞机到那个城市去做一次面谈。

But it was right in the middle of final exams so he asked the committee to wait a couple days—first things first, he said.
可眼下正是期末考试期间，因此他请求评选委员会等待几天——先做要紧的事情，他说。

Luckily, they understood and allowed him to finish up his exams.
幸好他们表示理解，同意他把考试考完。

When exams were over, Gary found out that the festival was flying him first class.
考试结束之后，加里发现这个活动可以让他坐头等舱。

Gary had never flown first class before.
加里以前还没坐过头等舱。

This festival must have a lot of money, he thought!
这次活动一定有很多钱，他想！

Certainly more than he did! He could hardly survive on his financial aid!
当然比他的钱多！靠他的补助金，他连活下来都困难！

Landing in the city several people met him and took him to a hotel.
到达那座城市的时候，有几个人来接他并把他送到了一家旅馆。

Why all the attention? Gary thought.
为什么会这么兴师动众呢？加里想。

But he couldn't find his tongue and went along to find out which way the wind blows.
可是他不知道说什么好，只能跟着走，看看情况到底如何.

When he met the committee that evening he was treated like the first and foremost person in the room.
当天晚上他和评选委员会见了面，他像最重要的贵宾一样受到款待。

First of all, they escorted him to the head of the table.
首先，他们送他入了贵宾席。

Then they wined him and dined him like he had never experienced.
接着他们以好酒好菜招待他，这一切他还从未经历过。

Then Gary found out what was going on!
这时加里才弄明白到底是怎么回事。

The committee thought his film was excellent!
原来评选委员会认为他的电影棒极了！

The best they had seen in a long time.
是他们长久以来见过的最佳影片。

They could not find fault with it and therefore wanted to distribute it as it was as a major motion picture!
他们对这部电影挑不出任何毛病，因此想把它作为主打电影发出去！

Gary had somehow found his level and that was among the best.
加里总算得到与他的才干相当的评价，这真是人生一大幸事。

When Gary stood up to thank them he could hardly find his legs to stand.
当加里站起来向他们表示感谢时，他几乎都站不住了。

No need for first aid, though, he said.
没有必要做急救，他说。

He was just overwhelmed by the opportunity.
不过这次机会使他高兴坏了。

His film was released to the public two months later to high acclaim!
两个月后，他的电影公开发行，果然是好评如潮！
