  • Now, the VOA Learning English program Words and Their Stories.
  • 现在是VOA学英语《词汇掌故》节目。
  • On this program we explore common expressions that we use in everyday life.
  • 节目中,我们探索日常交际中的常见表达。
  • Today we are talking about a simple verb -- "to blow".
  • 今天我们要谈论一个简单的动词“blow(吹)”。
  • Sometimes the word means to push air out of your mouth,
  • 有时候,这个单词意思是口中吹出气体,
  • like when a child blows bubbles or when you blow out the candles on your birthday cake.
  • 像孩子吹泡泡或者你吹灭生日蛋糕上的蜡烛。
  • You can also blow your nose when you are sick.
  • 当你生病的时候你也可以擤鼻子(blow your nose)。
  • Or, when you love someone, you may blow them a kiss.
  • 或者,当你喜欢一个人的时候,你也许可以送一个飞吻(blow them a kiss)给对方。
  • Those expressions are easy to understand. But what does it mean to blow someone's cover?
  • 这些表达很容易理解。但是“blow someone's cover”是什么意思呢?
  • Here is a hint: A spy might worry about her cover being blown,
  • 这里有个提示:间谍可能担心自己的身份暴露(cover being blown),
  • especially if she uses a false name and a made-up life story.
  • 如果她用了假名且编造了自己的人生经历那就更担心了。
  • When someone's cover is blown, that person's real identity is discovered!
  • 当某人的身份暴露(someone's cover is blown)了,这个人的真实身份就被发现了!
  • But even us non-spies can use this expression.
  • 但即使不是间谍的我们也可以使用这个表达。
  • Anytime you present false information and then you let the truth slip out, you have blown your cover.
  • 任何时候你提供了虚假信息,之后你无意中说出了真相,你就泄底(blow your cover)了。
  • Being discovered when you are trying to hide can be very upsetting.
  • 当你试图隐藏却被发现会让你很不快。
  • You could become angry. In such times, you might blow your stack, or blow your top.
  • 你可能会生气。在这些时候,你也许会发脾气(blow your stack)或是很火大(blow your top)。
  • You could also blow a fuse or blow a gasket.
  • 你也可能会勃然大怒(blow a fuse)或是大发雷霆(blow a gasket)。
  • These all mean to get so angry that you lose control.
  • 这些意思都是指太生气以至于情绪失控。
  • So, be careful when you are blowing your stack, top, fuse or gasket.
  • 因此,当你正发脾气、火大、大怒或者大发雷霆的时候要小心了。
  • When you are so angry, you might make mistakes.
  • 当你特别生气的时候,你有可能会犯错误。
  • For example, if you blow your stack while taking a test, you might blow it.
  • 例如:当你考试的时候生着气,你可能会考砸。
  • In other words, you fail it as a result of your own actions.
  • 换句话说,由于你自己的行为导致你考试失利。
  • You can also blow an important assignment at work. You can blow it with a personal relationship.
  • 你可以将工作任务搞砸。你可以因为个人关系而搞砸它。
  • Unfortunately, with almost anything ... you can blow it!
  • 可悲的是,你几乎可能因为任何事情而搞砸工作!
  • Blowing it is really upsetting. So, to blow off steam, you might go for a long walk in the woods.
  • 搞砸工作真得让人很烦躁。那么,为了发泄不满(blow off steam),你也许可以到树林里走走。
  • Blowing off steam helps us to relax when we are angry or upset.
  • 发泄不满可以在我们生气或者烦躁的时候帮助我们放松自己。
  • Think of a teapot. It releases steam when it gets too hot. The same can be said for us!
  • 想想茶壶。当茶水太热的时候,茶壶就释放出蒸汽。这个说法也适用于我们!
  • Now, let's talk about grammar for a moment.
  • 现在,让我们聊会儿语法。
  • As you probably know, when we use the active tense of a verb, the subject is doing the action.
  • 也许正如你所知,当我们使用主动语态的动词时,主体正在进行这个行为。
  • In the passive tense, the subject is receiving the action.
  • 在被动语态里,主体正承受这个行为。
  • For example, we often use the expression mind blown in the passive tense.
  • 例如,我们经常在被动语态里使用“ mind blown”这个表达。
  • You can have your mind blown by just about anything that's really, really good.
  • 你可能因为任何特别特别棒的事物而极度兴奋(mind blown)。
  • I've had my mind blown by a really smart movie or by a really delicious meal.
  • 我曾因为一个真正的智能影院或是一道真正的美食而兴奋不已。
  • You can also turn this expression around and make it active.
  • 你也可以将这个表达转变为主动语态。
  • For example, I can say, "I had an amazing Saturday night.
  • 例如,我可以说:“我度过了一个非常精彩的星期六夜晚。
  • That movie and meal really blew my mind!"
  • 那场电影和那顿餐惊艳到我了!”
  • We also commonly use this expression as an adjective.
  • 我们也往往将这个表达用作形容词。
  • Let's say you are a great soccer player. Your abilities to dribble and score are mind-blowing.
  • 假设你是一个了不起的足球运动员。你的运球和得分能力让人印象深刻(mind-blowing)。
  • In fact, in your last season, every game you played was a blow out.
  • 实际上,在上个赛季里,你的每一场比赛都完爆对方。
  • In other words, your team beat the other team by many, many points.
  • 换句话说,你们队领先对方很多很多分。
  • Now, let's say you that during one of those blow-out games, you scored the most points.
  • 现在,假设在这些完爆比赛中,你赢得的分数最多。
  • So, when reporters interview you, you take credit for the win.
  • 所以,当记者采访你的时候,你将赢得比赛归功于自己。
  • You even criticize your teammates for almost blowing the game with all of their mistakes.
  • 你甚至因为你队友们的失误差点搞砸比赛而批评他们。
  • As a result, your team gets upset with you, and your fans are not too happy either.
  • 结果,你的队友们对你很不满,你的粉丝们也不太开心。
  • You blew your own horn way too much.
  • 你自吹自擂(blew one's own horn)的有点过了。
  • When people blow their own horns, they talk too much and too proudly about their own successes.
  • 当人们自吹自擂的时候,他们夸夸其谈且对自己的成功过于骄傲。
  • The words may be music to their ears,
  • 那些话他们听着也许悦耳,
  • but others rarely enjoy listening to people blowing their own horns.
  • 但很少有人喜欢听别人自吹自擂。
  • But let's go back to your soccer game.
  • 但让我们说回你的足球比赛。
  • Everyone is angry with you after you blew the press conference.
  • 在你搞砸了记者会之后,每个人都很生你的气。

  • 所以,你决定离开市中心几天,直到负面评论消失(blow over)。
  • When a storm blows over, it passes.

  • I can say, "Don't worry. This storm will blow over soon."
  • 我可以说:“不用担心。这场风暴很快就会过去。”
  • Happily for us, problems can blow over too.
  • 令人开心地是,问题也可以过去(解决)。
  • See? We have thousands of expressions that use the verb "blow." Okay, not really thousands.
  • 明白了?我们有成千上万使用了动词“blow”的表达。好吧,不是真有成千上万个。
