- And Pima of Arizona have some of the highest rates of diabetes in the world, I'm sure you've heard about it on the news

- They had a piece in your times about it not too long ago

- By the time you're in your 30s as a Pima, you have well over 50% chance of developing diabetes

- And when you go truly down into the canyons, and look for diabetes among the Tarahumara you don't find it

- And so can we say that this is genetics

- No, because their cousins in Arizona have some of the highest rates in the world

- So it tells us that this really probably has a lot to do with diet

- So what did they eat

- Very simple, they really are quite vegan in their approach to eating

- They eat the three sisters, las tres hermanas, They eat corn and beans and squash

- And when we're talking about corn, it's not at all in a processed form

- As a matter fact, their tortillas like the ones that I traded with that woman

- They're thick and rich and nutty, and honestly, you eat one of them, you're full

- And if you had another one left over, You could use it to scrub the corns off your feet or clean the ring out from your bathtub
