In a deal worth $2.6 billion, Alaska Air purchased Virgin America, making it the biggest carrier on the West Coast and reigniting the debate over airline consolidation.

The merger pushes Alaska ahead of JetBlue Airways to become the fifth largest carrier in the U.S. based on passengers.

Alaska CEO Brad Tilden told investors on a call Monday morning, "Our goal is to be the premier airline for people along the West Coast."

Alaska added that the deal will add Virgin's 200 daily departures to its existing 1,000 daily flights.
