An epic failure of a cosmetic surgery causes immortality!
The maniac of a patient hunts down the unlicensed doctor for years!
And finally gets what he wanted: the recognition of a strip club escort girl!
Ryan Reynolds's Deadpool laments his twisted form much like the hunchback of Notre-Dame, but at heart the title hero is hardly ever as pure as Victor Hugo's church bellman.
Wade Wilson's obsession with what he looks like instead of what he really is, plus all the strong violence, inappropriate language and graphic nudity, have turned Marvel's latest superhero flick into a deadly attraction to the most adolescent of viewers, but ironically, it is just too R-rated to fall within their immediate reach.
But no worries, because box office figures suggest those who want a peek into the saucy content may have already gotten what they wished for. By the end of the fifth week, Deadpool has become the second highest-grossing R-rated film of all time with a worldwide total of 711 million dollars, just 30 million bucks behind current front-runner "The Matrix Reloaded."
This sounds good for 20th Century Fox, the film's distributor, and even better for the Marvel Studios. Not only is the California-based filmmaker making gratifying profits as it expands the fictional universe envisioned by Stan Lee, but the prospect of future windfalls is all the more secured given the extend of success it has had in diversifying its product portfolio.
Apart from the superstar hodgepodge The Avengers and an upcoming smaller hodgepodge Captain America: Civil War, the American motion picture studio is also churning out equally phenomenal franchises with less expensive casts. Both Guardians of the Galaxy and Deadpool stand out with slightly varying characteristics, Guardian is funny with good music, Deadpool is dead funny and R-rated. Antman may seem relatively inadequate in the funny index, but still managed to pull in more than 500 million dollars worldwide.
These examples attest to the effects of Marvel's expansion strategy, but while the filmmakers have reason to cheer, the viewers don't.
There was a time when even blockbuster movies offered more than just entertainment. The X-Men series spoke of tolerance, The Lord of the Rings trilogy extolled human tenacity and perseverance, among many things. And don't forget The Matrix, which somewhat appalled the world with the wildest imagination that may one day become reality. The amount of ingenuity poured into these popcorn movies created far greater repercussion in the minds of the audience than in the balance sheet of a tax accountant.
Now let's look at what Deadpool has blessed us with other than a momentary romp. We've learnt how the immortal superhero came to being, we know he and his friends like to crack raunchy jokes among themselves and he is hyper-sensitive to the way he looks. But we don't know why he is so keen on hunting down his adversary instead of seeking a second opinion if the goal of all the massacre is to find a cure to his condition, and we'll never be able to understand why he couldn't have just talked to his sweetheart for all those years. These things don't make sense, certainly not in the grown-up world.
Indeed, the urge to swear and the obsession with physical appearance betray the sentiment of an adolescent always on the lookout to impress the closest girl on sight. No men who has mentally passed the stage of puberty must find the affectation amusing, but sadly as the numbers show, tens of millions are yet to rise above their immaturity, and that's including myself.
