Manager Mike Scioscia
Matt B Also, since the 1990s Major League Baseball has been plagued by the effects of a steroid epidemc, yet in the middle of the steroid era, Mike Scioscia was able to use a creative uncommon strategy to lead his team to its first World Series victory in franchise history.Scioscia's 2002 Angels employed a strategy known as “small ball" in which the team tries to place runners on base and move them over in a methodical way, typically with bunts and stolen bases. This philosophy centers around a good pitching staff, consistent and fast hitters, and a lack of power in the lineup. While this strategy was not new, it was uncommon in the steroid era where home runs were the preferred method of scoring. Despite hitting the least home runs in the league, the Angels won the World Series as a result of their league leading ERA,Stolen Bases, and Sacrifice Bunts. Through the use of a creative and unconventional strategy, Angels manager Mike Scioscia led his ballclub to unexpected success.
