1.household n．家庭，户 adj.家庭的，家常的，普通的
【记】组合词：house(房屋)+hold(拥有)--家庭，户
【例】For too many highly intelligent working women, home represents household chores.

2.pendent adj.下垂的，悬挂着的；未决的，未定的
【记】词根记忆：pend(悬挂)+ent--悬挂着的
【例】The pendent lamp well suited the style of the room.
这盏吊灯非常适合屋子的风格。

3.withhold v．不给，拒绝
【记】联想记忆：with(相反)+hold(保留)--保留不给--拒绝
【例】A mother plans to sue the hospital where her baby son died after doctors were given permission to withhold treatment.
医生得到允许不对一名男婴提供治疗致其死亡，其母计划起诉该医院。
【辨】keep, retain, withhold二个词都有“保持、保留”的意思。keep最为常用，指“使…持续下去”，如keep the classroom clean; retain比较正式，强调“保持其不被夺走”；withhold有“保留某信息不被泄露”的意思，如：
withhold the truth。

4.repel v．逐退，驱逐：使厌恶，使反感

【例】The soldiers repelled the enemy with many losses.
战士们击退了敌人，但损失惨重。
The rudeness of the woman in the street repels everyone.
街道上那个女人的粗鲁使每个人都很反感。

5.fatal adj.致命的；毁灭性的
【记】联想记忆：fat(肥胖的)+al--肥胖对女性可是致命的--致命的

6.crash v．碰撞，坠落；发出撞击（或爆裂）声；失败．垮台 n．碰撞,坠落;撞击声，爆裂声；失败，垮台
【例】61 people were killed during the air crash.
61人在空难中死亡。(2000听力)
【用】crash指的是突然猛烈地掩击． 并伴有轰隆声；经常用来表示飞机失事或汽车相撞。

7.portray Vt．描绘，描写；扮演
【例】The painting portrays the loneliness and apartness of the individuals in an urbanized society.
这幅画描绘了都市化社会中个人的孤独和冷漠。

8.veto n．[pl.]否决权；否决或禁止某事物的声明 vt.否决或禁止（某事物）
【例】The US House votes to ease curbs on funding stem-cell research, defying President Bush's threat to veto the bill.
美国议院投票通过放宽对干细胞研究注资的监管力度，没有理会布什总统否决该法案的威胁。
