As an American college student studying Chinese language and culture in Beijing, Beijing is actually a difficult place to learn Chinese because it is such an international city and the expat community is so big.
And a lot of the local Chinese people are so good at speaking English that it was difficult for me to learn Chinese when I was living in Beijing.
So when I discovered the world of Chinese tea, I was fascinated by it because so much of the history and the types of tea and the tea wares surround the world of Chinese tea is all still in Chinese language.
So now having researched tea for 6 or seven years in China, I get to use Chinese language on a daily basis which is great.
What's really cool is that I'm constantly going back in time to the Qing, Ming or earlier dynasties to learn the origins of specific tea varietals and learning about how the tea of that time interacted with the culture in the history of that period.
So tea has been a fascinating lens through which to learn Chinese language, but also observe this long arc of history, which has been Chinese civilization.
And so for this period today, which is the meeting of presidents Xi and Biden in San Francisco.
I am hoping that the two of them can also sit down together and look back at the long arc of history, which is US-china partnership and cooperation, and talk about how this relationship might continue to be positive and productive into the future.
So to presidents Xi and Biden, I wish you guys the best of luck, and I hope that you have a great week of productive and positive communications.
Cheers.
