The ongoing Auto Shanghai 2009 is highlighting the use of energy-saving automobiles. Several top automakers, including GM and Ford, are set to unveil some of these cars. For many Chinese exhibitors, this will also be a good platform, to show new-energy products.
Domestic carmakers like BYD and Chery, have also presented, their new-energy vehicles. New-energy cars have become the trend of the global auto industry. But the question is, will Chinese consumers, embrace them? Our reporter, Zhangcheng, finds out.
Reporter:
New-energy autos mainly refer to electric or hybrid electric vehicles, which features less reliance on gasoline and diesel, energy-saving and environmental protection.
At the Shanghai Auto show, worldwide automakers display their new energy cars including Mecedes-benz's S400 and the General Motors' Chevy Volt which are expected to hit the showrooms in China in 2011.
As foreign automakers boast their new technology, homemade brands are also trying to attract more eyeballs.
Chery is one of them. Jin Yibo is the company spokesperson.
"Cherry has more than 200 square meters this year to present four new energy cars, including two electric ones and two hybrid ones. These four brands will be available in the market in the near future."
Besides Chery, BYD, famed for its lithium battery, also expresses its ambition.
It seems that domestic brands are tapping the potential of the new energy car and vie for the domestic auto market.
I have interviewed a visitor declined to give his name at the Auto show.
Faced with my question about whether he will buy a new energy car in the future.
He answers like this.
"Basically not, because its function might not be stable, the speed is not fast enough and without government's compensation, I think the price of it is still very high."
He further explains his concern.
"If I run a new energy car for a long-distance trip, once the power is off, it might be difficult for me to have the car recharged. And I'm also concerned where I can repair it if it dies down in the midway."
Some domestic Automakers have realized the rock on the road.
BYD says they are making efforts to realize the mass-production of its electric and hybrid cars.
In this way, the production costs can be lowered and more private buyers can afford their new energy cars.
Meanwhile, BYD plans to choose Shenzhen as a pilot city, to complete the supporting facilities for private consumers.
