President Donald Trump made a surprise announcement on Monday, saying the United States and Iran were poised to begin direct talks on Tehran's nuclear program.

However after Trump spoke, Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi posted on X that the upcoming discussions in Oman would be indirect, through a mediator.

In recent weeks, Trump has threatened to bomb Iran if they do not directly negotiate over their nuclear program.
