South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol will eventually step down, according to his party's leader, following a botched attempt at imposing martial law on Asia's fourth largest economy.
That's after Yoon survived an impeachment motion in parliament on Saturday, thanks to members of his ruling People Power Party boycotting the vote.
The motion failed to gain the minimum 200 votes to make it count, forcing National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-shik to declare it scrapped.
"The entire nation is watching the decision being made here at the National Assembly today," Woo said. "It's very regrettable that there wasn't even a vote on such a major national issue."
Outside parliament, protesters flooded the streets demanding Yoon be gone.
Earlier on Saturday, Yoon apologized to the nation, in his first public appearance since rescinding the martial law order.
"I leave it up to my party to take steps to stabilize the political situation in the future, including the issue of my term in office," he said in the televised address to the nation.
While he did not offer to step down, his party's leader Han Dong-hoon later said the party had decided that Yoon would resign in an "orderly" manner.
Han told reporters that until Yoon leaves, he would be "effectively excluded from his duties, and the prime minister will consult with the party to manage state affairs."
However, Han has a history of clashes with the president, and it was unclear if he was speaking for all party members.
