In this episode, I am going to teach you a very common, but maybe confusing, phrase. And that phrase is "every other." Every other. That's e-v-e-r-y, o-t-h-e-r. Every other.
在本期节目中,我将教您一个非常常见但可能令人困惑的短语。这个短语是“every other”。
You will hear this in a longer phrase, such as, "every other person," or "every other Sunday," or "every other time."
您会在较长的短语中听到这个短语,例如“every other person”或“every other Sunday”或“every other time”。
If you have not learned this expression before, you might think that it means "all of the other people," or "all of the other Sundays—or "every Sunday"—or "every time," or something like that.
如果你以前没有学过这个表达,你可能会认为它的意思是“所有其他人”,或“所有其他的星期日”或“每个星期日”或“每次”,诸如此类。
That might make sense, but that's not what it means. When we refer to every other thing, we do not mean all of the other things. Instead, we are talking about alternating things.
这可能有道理,但这不是它的意思。当我们提到every other thing时,我们并不是指所有其他的事情。相反,我们谈论的是交替的事情。
What do I mean by that? Let me give you an example, and I think you will understand what I am talking about.
我的意思是什么?让我举个例子,我想你会明白我在说什么。
Let's say that your friend is going away on a vacation, and she has asked you to go to her house every day to feed her cat. She also tells you that her cat needs medicine.
假设你的朋友要去度假,她让你每天去她家喂她的猫。她还告诉你她的猫需要吃药。
And these are the instructions that your friend gives you: your friend says, "Please remember to give my cat one pill every other day while I'm gone, starting on Sunday."
这些是你朋友给你的指示:你的朋友说,“Please remember to give my cat one pill every other day while I'm gone, starting on Sunday.”
You might think this means one pill on Sunday and then one pill on each other day. One pill on Sunday, one pill on Monday, on Tuesday, on Wednesday, et cetera.
你可能会认为这意味着周日吃一片药,然后每一天吃一片药。周日吃一片,周一吃一片,周二吃一片,周三吃一片,等等等等。
But that is not what it means. Instead, it is describing a system of alternating days. So, your friend wants you to give her cat a pill on Sunday.
但这不是它的意思。相反,它描述的是交替日系统。你的朋友希望你在周日给她的猫喂药。
And then skip the next day—skip Monday—then give the cat a pill on Tuesday, then skip the next day, and give the cat a pill on Thursday, and so on.
然后跳过第二天——跳过星期一——然后在星期二给猫喂药,然后跳过第二天,在星期四给猫喂药,依此类推。
And so, "every other day" means every second day. Not each day, but one day, and then not the next day, but then the next day, and not the next day.
因此,“every other day”意味着每隔一天。不是each day,而是one day,然后不是the next day,而是then the next day。
That's what it means when we say "every other." It means we are talking about doing something and then skipping one, and then doing it again, and skipping another one.
这就是我们说“every other”的意思。这意味着我们在谈论做某事,然后跳过一个,然后再做一次,然后跳过另一个。
And that is "every other," a very common, useful—and maybe confusing—expression that I think you should know.
以上就是“every other”的用法,一个非常常见、有用,也许令人困惑的表达,我认为你应该知道。
