I can't give anybody advice. I'm not in a position to be giving advice. My advice to myself would be to ask somebody else.

Hi I'm Alec Benjamin and I'm here with Seventeen to take a look back at my career. This is then versus now.

I've been singing and making music since I was 14 years old. And I'm here to tell you all of the ways that my career has changed since then. The first professional singing gig.

I'm from Arizona and I performed at this grand opening for this clothing store. I was compensated in the form of like it was supposed to be like a gift card.

I don't think anyone really showed up for the grand opening. So I basically just performed for the employees, which was fine but they wanted me to play for like two hours.

But I didn't like have two hours worth of material. I tried to learn some covers. It was rough, it was very rough. The store went out of business before I got my gift card.

How long does it take to write a song? Then versus now, it's still about the same.

I think in some ways I've become more efficient but you know, sometimes it takes like an hour and sometimes it takes like a week or a month to put all the pieces together.

But I don't think that the amount of time you spend writing a song is like directly correlated with the quality of the song.

Okay, so then when I first started performing I wanted to throw up before every single show, particularly when I was doing things where I wasn't performing my own music.

I wasn't necessarily comfortable with like sing songs that my voice wasn't really built for. And now it's only actually in the last sort of like 40, 50 shows I've played.

So the last like two tours where I can confidently say that there have been shows where I've walked on stage and not felt nervous.

My pre-performance rituals then, everything in the day that preceded the show was centered around getting ready for the show. And now my rituals take place 30 minutes before the show.

And a ritual that I have now is, yeah I go to the bathroom and then my band we all get together around the stage and we do this thing we put our arms like this, we get in a circle we say a phrase and it's different for every tour, and then we get ready and we get on stage.

A favorite song of mine then, it was Sweater Weather by the Neighborhood. I listened to that song a trillion times. I thought they were, still do, I think The Neighborhood is so cool.

And now my favorite song is, it's hard for me to say what my favorite song is but when I recuperate and I have, you know, fresh ears, I'll let you know.

Music artists I look up to then and now pretty much all the same people. Coldplay, I love Eminem, I love Jason Mraz, John Mayer. I love System of A Down.

There's a plethora of bands and artists that I really look up to and I was like so much more malleable then than I am now.

And I actually miss that 'cause I love being influenced by things and I found it much easier when I was younger.

Excitement to release new music then whoa, now and then I don't really get so excited to release new music. I get excited when the music I've released is discovered by people.
