Chief Executive John Lee announced that government officials will be heading to Sichuan very soon to iron out the arrival arrangements of a pair of giant pandas gifted by mainland.

Speaking to the media during his weekly briefing, Lee emphasized it is crucial to ensure that the arrangement would be smooth and safe.

"We have experience of receiving the gifts of giant pandas from the Central Authorities.

And Ocean Park has been doing an excellent job in ensuring that they are well taken care of.

So what is important now, I think, is to ensure that we will actually carry out all the procedures as quickly as possible.

Lee did not say if the bears would arrive before National Day on October 1 to mark the occasion.

Following protocol, Lee pointed out that the animals have to be quarantined for at least 30 days in Sichuan and upon arrival.
