Sandra Day O'Connor is a pioneer of gender equality.

Her 1981 appointment as the first female Supreme Court Justice was

a great leap forward for women nationwide, though she was a reluctant trailblazer.

Well my heart sank, frankly.

It did. It did.

I really didn't want it.

I'll tell you why.

It's fine to be the first to do something major but I didn't wanna be the last.

And if I took it and didn't do it, well, it might have been the last and I just thought that was kind of high-risk.

But meeting challenges was in her DNA.

O'Connor and her siblings were raised on a remote cattle ranch in Arizona,

where her parents demanded hard work and resourcefulness.

I don't think they had high-expectations of me as such.

It was just that whatever job I was given to do, I was expected to do it well.

Now if I did, I never got a thank you or well done, but if I didn't, I sure heard about it. So...

O'Connor's journey from the land to the law took her to

Stanford University to study economics and then to Stanford Law School.

But after graduation, she could not get hired.

1% of law students in those days were female across the country.

1%. That's what it was at Stanford too.

And I was very naive because I never thought for a minute

when I was in law school that I'd have trouble getting a job.

It never occurred to me.

She eventually found some unpaid legal work and from humble beginnings,

she rose up the ranks, smashing one glass ceiling after another.
