Susie: Good. As I told you in the interview that we have a pretty relaxed culture here in our company, but there are still some formal rules. First let me fill you in on some informal do’s and don’ts.

Coco: I see. When you have to punch a clock you feel that you are watched.

Susie: And sure we don’t mind a normal number of personal phone calls, but we would like everyone not to have too many.

Susie:上班的时候打几个私人电话没什么，不过不要太多。

Coco: I understand.

Coco:知道了。

Susie: And if you need to make personal long distance call, please tell the accounting department so they can bill you later.

Susie:如果上班时打私人长途电话，请通知财务部，他们会在 你的工资里扣除长途话费。

Coco: Ok. Are there any subjects that are taboo to talk about?

Susie: If there is one, salary is. It can sometimes cause trouble and interoffice rivalries and therefore hurts morale.

Coco: I see what you mean. It’s been a problem in almost every company I’ve worked.

Susie: Also, because there is a fine line between small talk and gossip, it’s a good idea not to talk about other people’s private lives.

Coco: Especially when people are not there to defend themselves.

Coco:是啊，尤其是背后议论别人很不好。

Susie: I agree. Speaking of private life, interoffice romance is not a good idea, either, even though it’s not officially frowned upon.

Coco: That sounds reasonable. I’ll do my best.

重点：

(1)fill someone in on something 提供消息(给某人) 这个短语是较为口语化的表达用法，是说将必要的事情告诉他人。要注意“人”和“事”的顺序。

Eg: Our manager has filled everyone in on the new proposal in yesterday’s meeting.

我们的经理在昨天的会议上已经告知了大家有关新方案的事情。

(2)do’s and don’ts 行为规范

这个短语是由助动词 do 派生出来的用法，作名词用。表示“可以做”和“不可以做”的事情。do 的复数形式也可以是 dos。

Eg: In our company, one of the informal dos and don’ts is that you should silence your cell phone in office hours.

我们公司有一项不成文的规定，上班时间要把手机设置成 静音。

(3)punch in/ out 打卡签到 / 下班punch 是动词，意思是“打孔”，也有“猛击”的意思。

Eg: Nowadays, few companies have punching in and out system.

现在，很少有公司还实施打卡制度。

morale 既可以指士兵的士气，也可以指一支球队或者团队 以及公司的士气。

指一种非常微妙的区别，有时令人难以分辨。

Eg: There is a fine line between love and hate. 爱恨交织，令人难辨。

(7)small talk 闲聊

要和 gossip 区分开来。small talk 不带贬意，而 gossip 是指传播或散布流言蜚语。

(8)private lives 私生活

这里 lives 是 life 的复数形式，原形为 private life。private 指私人的、私立的，如 private detective(私人侦探)、private school(私立学校)等。

(9)speaking of 提到

Eg:Speak of angels, and you will hear their wings.

说曹操，曹操到。

Eg: Smoking is frowned upon in a lot of companies. 很多公司都不赞成员工吸烟。
