Hey, everyone! Guess what: I think spring is almost here! Where we live, daffodils bloom in the spring… and I saw my first one today!

I know! I'm excited, too! Watching for daffodils is kind of a springtime tradition for me.

I planted some daffodils right behind The Fort a few years ago, and I watch that spot in early spring every year to make sure I don't miss seeing those first daffodils poke up through the soil.
几年前，我在沃斯堡后面种了一些水仙花，每年早春的时候我都会去那里看，以确保我不会错过第一批水仙花从土壤中探出头来的场景。
And every time, they appear in just the same spot as I planted them all those years ago! It's kind of magical! And science can help us explain why it happens.

See, daffodils grow in a way that's different from some other kinds of plants.
你看，水仙花的生长方式和其他植物不同。
They grow from what we call bulbs. Bulbs are special parts of plants that grow under the ground.
它们是从我们所说的鳞茎植物中生长出来的。鳞茎是植物生长在地下的特殊部分。
Great question! Bulbs aren't quite the same as seeds — but they do have some things in common with them!
问得好！鳞茎和种子不太一样，但它们确实有一些共同之处！
For example, they need the same things to grow.
例如，它们生长所需的东西是一样的。
Like, Squeaks and I plant seeds in The Fort's garden every spring when it starts to get warmer outside.

And what do we make sure these seeds get after we plant them?
当我们种下这些种子之后我们要确保它们得到什么呢？
Yep, definitely. Water, and after they sprout, some light.

And plants that grow from bulbs need these things, too — all plants do!

So, winter can be hard on these kinds of plants.

There's not a lot of sunlight in winter, and there's less water.
冬天阳光少，水也少。
And the water that is around tends to be frozen into ice! And plants can't use water if it's frozen solid.
周围的水都冻成冰了！如果水被冻成固体了，那么植物就无法再利用这些水了。
So, many plants die in late fall. And then, we have to plant new seeds in the spring.
所以很多植物在晚秋时节就会死亡。然后到了春天我们就需要播种新的种子。
But other plants come back year after year… and we don't have to replant them — because they neer actually died!.
不过有些植物会年复一年地生长，不需要我们重新种植，因为它们从来没有死亡过！
We call these kinds of plants perennials.
我们称这些植物为“多年生植物”。
Daffodils are perennials! In fact, most flowers that grow from bulbs are.
水仙花是多年生植物！其实，大多从鳞茎中长出的花儿都是“多年生植物”。
Let's look closely at a bulb to see why!

If we look all the way in the center of the bulb, we can see a tiny plant! Look how cute it is!

This teeny plant has mini versions of most of the parts that a big plant has, like a squashed down stem… some little leaves… and a tiny flower bud.

But that's not all! The little plant is surrounded by what are called scales.
但这还不是全部！这种小的植物被称为“鳞片”的东西包裹着。
These scales store energy, which in this case looks like food and nutrients — the sorts of things that living things like plants need to stay healthy and strong.
这些鳞片会储存能量，就像食物和营养物质一样——植物等生物需要能量来保持健康和强壮。
These help to keep the baby daffodil alive during the winter when it's not growing.
它们有助于让小水仙花在冬天不生长时也存活下来。
That's a great question! Squeaks wants to know, if a plant isn't growing… well, what is it doing?

Well, some plants go dormant. That means they're just hanging out, resting, and waiting until there's enough water and sunlight to start growing again.
有些植物会休眠，就是说它们会无所事事、休息、等待，直到有足够的水和阳光重新开始生长。
Going dormant is a little like sleeping. We can often tell a plant is dormant if we don't see any leaves.
休眠有点儿像睡觉。如果我们在一株植物上没有看到叶子，那么通常我们可以判断它正处在休眠状态。
Yes! Good call, Squeaks.

Some trees lose all their leaves in fall… and go dormant in winter.
有些树会在秋天落叶，冬天休眠。
In the spring and summer, trees use their leaves to catch light from the Sun and make food for themselves.
而春天和夏天它们就会用叶子捕捉太阳光来为自己制造食物。
But in the winter, they don't have enough sunlight to make all the food they need to grow — so they drop their leaves and go dormant.
但在冬天，它们没有足够的阳光来提供生长所需的食物，所以它们的叶子会掉落，然后进入休眠状态。
They stop growing, but they stay alive!
虽然它们停止了生长，但它们仍活着！
Now, plants don't need as much food and energy when they're dormant. But they do need a little bit.

And the food stored inside the scales of the bulb keeps a daffodil alive while it's dormant!
在水仙花休眠期间，鳞片里储存的食物能让水仙花保持生命！
Then, once spring arrives, the daffodil uses up most of the bulb's food to grow and push its leaves and flowers up through the soil!

And after that, the plant uses water and sunlight to get the nutrients it needs to keep growing.

When the daffodil is done blooming, the petals and leaves wither and die, and the plant starts to store up food and energy in its bulb again for the next winter.

So, the whole story repeats! Now, daffodils aren't the only kind of flower that grows from a bulb.

Tulips, lilies, and some other kinds of flowers we see in early spring also come from bulbs.
