Oh! at that moment I could have cast all my playthings and all my books at his feet, I could have torn the last morsel of bread from my lips to give to him, I could have divested myself of my clothing to clothe him, I could have flung myself on my knees to kiss his hand. "I will at least give you the train," I thought; but--was necessary to ask permission of my father. At that moment I felt a bit of paper thrust into my hand. I looked; it was written in pencil by my father; it said:
在这时候，我恨不得把我所有的玩具、书物，都送给了他，就是把我自己正要吃的面包，正在穿着的衣服全送给他，也决不可惜。还想伏倒在他身旁去吻他的手。我想：“至少把那火车送他吧！又觉得非和父亲说明不可。正踌躇间，忽然有人把纸条塞到我手里来，一看，原来是父亲。纸条上用铅笔写着：
"Your train pleases Precossi. He has no playthings. Does your heart suggest nothing to you?"

Instantly I seized the engine and the cars in both hands, and placed the whole in his arms, saying:--
我立刻双手捧了火车，交在泼来可西的手中：
"Take this; it is yours."
“把这送给你！”
He looked at me, and did not understand. "It is yours," I said; "I give it to you."
泼来可西看着我，好像不懂的样子，我又说：“是把这送给你。”
Then he looked at my father and mother, in still greater astonishment, and asked me:--
泼来可西惊异起来，一边看我父亲母亲，一边问我：
"But why?"
“但是，为什么？”
My father said to him:--"Enrico gives it to you because he is your friend, because he loves you--to celebrate your medal."
“因为安利柯和你是朋友。他把这个送给你，当做你得赏牌的贺礼。”父亲说。
Precossi asked timidly:--
泼来可西很难为情的样子：
"I may carry it away--home?"
“那么，我可以拿了回去吗？”
"Of course!" we all responded. He was already at the door, but he dared not go out. He was happy! He begged our pardon with a mouth that smiled and quivered. Garrone helped him to wrap up the train in a handkerchief, and as he bent over, he made the things with which his pockets were filled rattle.
“自然可以。”我们大家答他。泼来可西走出门口时，欢喜得嘴唇发振，卡隆帮他把火车包在手帕里。
"Some day," said Precossi to me, "you shall come to the shop to see my father at work. I will give you some nails."
“几时，我引你到父亲的工作场里去，把钉子送你吧！”泼来可西向我说。
My mother put a little bunch of flowers into Garrone's buttonhole, for him to carry to his mother in her name. Garrone said, "Thanks," in his big voice, without raising his chin from his breast. But all his kind and noble soul shone in his eyes.
母亲把小花束插入卡隆的纽孔中，说：“给我带去送给你的母亲！”卡隆低了头大声地说：“多谢！”他那亲切高尚的精神，在眼光中闪耀着。
