In this lesson, I'm going to talk about two very similar English words. Power and strength.
本节课，将要为大家讲讲两个非常相似英语单词。Power和strength。
They're both bold, strong, serious words and very similar in their meaning.
它们都是非常有力、强烈、严肃的单词，而且意思非常相近。
But if you use these words incorrectly, it will start to sound unnatural or just a bit weird.
但是你如果使用不当，听起来会很不自然，还有点奇怪。
So that's why we're going to spend a little time today talking about the differences between them.
因此我们今天要花点时间讨论一下两者的区别。
Now we're more familiar with these words when it comes to fitness, right?
我们更加熟悉它们表示身体健康的含义，对吧？
Power relates to energy and an ability to do something,
“power”与力量有关，和做某件事的能力，
whereas strength relates to muscles and also an ability to do something.
而“strength”和肌肉有关，也和做某件事情的能力有关。
It's really easy to see physical power and strength in athletes, right?
在体育运动员身上很容易看到体能和力量，对吧？
You can see it.
你可以看到的。
But they both have a more intangible, less visible meaning too.
但是它们都是无形的、看不见的。
And that's where these words often get confused by English learners.
而那就是英语学习者经常感到困惑的地方。
So the word power refers to the ability of somebody or something to change or affect something.
“Power”这个单词指的是某个人或者某件事去改变或者影响某件事的能力。
So physically, a sprinter, who's someone who runs really fast over short distances,
所以身体上，短跑运动员在短距离内跑得很快，
they need power to change their speed and position quickly.
他们需要力量来迅速改变速度和位置。
But it can refer to mechanical situations as well, where a machine does something.
这个单词也可以应用于机械上，就是用机器来做事情的情况。
Or it can refer to social or political situations where a person or a group does something
它还可以指社会或者是政治情境，在这种情境中一个人或者是一个团体做了某件事情，
and this is often related to the ability to influence or control people or a situation.
而这经常与影响或控制某个人或某种情况的能力有关。
Now, power can also refer to your internal ability to change a situation.
现在呢，“power”也可以指你改变一种情况的内部能力。
You have the power to change your life if you really want to.
如果你真的想的话，你有能力改变你的生活的。
Now the word strength has a few different meanings
“strength”这个词有一些不同的意思，
but most relevant here is that it refers to a person's physical or mental ability to do something.
它指的是某人做某事的身体或心灵的力量。
Obviously, it relates to physical strength, the strength of muscles to lift weights for example.
显然，它和体能力量相关，比如说举重的肌肉力量。
But also mental strength, so the strength of your mind to believe in yourself, to persevere, to overcome problems and doubts.
但是还有心灵的力量，也就是你相信你自己，坚持不懈、战胜困难，克服疑惑的力量。
Now, elite athletes are strong physically and mentally
顶尖运动员们身体和心灵都非常有力量，
because they must believe that they are the best, to be able to perform at their best.
因为他们相信自己是最优秀的，能够表现出最佳水平。
When describing people's ability to do something,
当描述人们做某事的能力时，
power usually refers to control over yourself, control over others or control over a situation.
“power”通常指的是控制自己、控制他人或控制局面。
So in some ways, this can be a negative expression of dominance or something that must be fought for or taken away from others.
因此，在某些方面，这可能是一种负面的带有支配意思的表达，或者必须争取或夺走别人的某种东西。
Where strength is positive and often it comes from within, within a person or within a group.
“Strength” 是正面的词汇，它通常都来自于内部，来自于某个人或者是某个团体。
Generally,strength is a more positive and pure way of expressing an ability to do something.
一般来说，“Strength”是一种表达做某事的能力的更积极、更纯粹的方式。
Both the words power and strength are nouns
“power”和“strength”这两个词都是名词，
but just as common, are their adjective forms, powerful and strong,
但同样常见的是它们的形容词形式，“powerful”和“strong”，
which, when used, tend to sound a little more informal.
这两个词使用起来都有点非正式。
She's a strong and determined woman.
她是个坚强而坚定的女人。
This is the most powerful and proactive government since the 1950s.
这是自20世纪50年代以来最强大和最积极的政府。
Strength can also mean an advantage or a positive part about you.
“Strength”也可以指你的一个优势，或者是积极的部分。
In a job interview, you might get asked this question, “What are your strengths?“
在求职面试的时候，你可能会被问到这个问题——你的长处是什么？
For me, that's the dreaded question!
对我来说，这是个可怕的问题！
I hate having to talk about my strengths.
我讨厌谈论我的长处。
But what are the good features or characteristics that you have?
但是你有什么长处或优点呢？
That you'll be able to use to help you do your job well.
这些长处能够帮助你胜任你的工作。
One of her biggest strengths is her determination to succeed.
她最大的优点之一是她必胜的决心。
Keep in mind that strength has a direct opposite. Weakness.
记住，“strength”有一个反义词，“Weakness”。
We need to identify the weaknesses in our team.
我们需要认清自己团队的劣势。
But power does not have a direct opposite.
但是“power”没有反义词。
We would just say lack of power or describe someone as powerless, unable to change a situation.
我们只会说缺少力量或形容某人无力，无法改变局面。
The community were powerless to stop the resort development.
社区无力阻止度假村的开发。
