The film sets up a contrast between the unequal social classes, following the poor Kim family who live in a half-basement apartment and the fabulously wealthy Pu family who own a big house.
Paul Piff said in a TED Talk that, as a person's levels of wealth increase, their feelings of compassion and empathy go down, and their feelings of entitlement, of deservingness, and their ideology of self-interest increase...Actually wealthier individuals are more likely to moralize greed being good, and that the pursuit of self-interest is favorable and moral.
"The true horror and fear of Parasite isn't just about how the present-day situation is bad but that it will only continue to get worse. That's my own fear in my life. I'm 50 now, so I'm going to die in about 30 years. My son is 23 now. When he reaches middle age, after I die, will it get better? I don't know. I'm not so hopeful. Still, we have to try to live happily."
