As it turns out, certain strains of influenza are zoonotic diseases, meaning they can be transferred from humans to animals.

In late 2011, the united states center for disease control discovered

that northern sea otters living off the coast of washington had been exposed to the H1N1 virus.

Although this particular strain spurred world wide panic in 2009,

it has continued to be the most dominant kind of virus through the 2013/2014 flu season.

After testing blood samples, scientists found H1N1 antibodies in seventy percent of the sea otters they studied.

Although the otters didn't appear sick, the presence of these antibodies means that they were exposed to the flu at some point.

A separate 2010 study concluded that northern elephant seals had also been infected with the 2009 H1N1 virus in california.

According to scientists, these particular animals live in a secluded area

Essentially, we have no idea where, how or when these animals became sick- in fact, they could have even spread it to each other!

While sea otters and elephant seals are some of the first marine mammals to be infected with an influenza virus,
