Squeaks and I were just learning about a really cool animal!

See if you can guess what it is:

It's really big...it has four legs...a little tail...and a big horn on its nose...

That's right! It's a rhinoceros, or rhino for short!

They're such awesome animals! But there aren't a lot of them left in the world.
它们是很了不起的动物，但世界上所剩不多。
Did you know that there's more than one type of rhinoceros?
你知道犀牛不只一种吗？
It's true! There are 5 types of rhino, and they all live in either Africa or Asia.
这是真的，犀牛有5个类型，它们都生活在非洲或亚洲。
But all rhinos have a few things in common: for starters, they're huge!
但所有的犀牛都有几个共同点：第一个，它们体型巨大！
The white rhino, which lives in Africa, is the biggest type of rhino.
生活在非洲的白犀牛体型最大，
A white rhino can weigh more than 2,000 kilograms, that's heavier than a car!
一头白犀牛重达2000多公斤，比一辆汽车还重！
Even the smallest type of rhino, the Sumatran rhino, can weigh close to a thousand kilograms.
即使是最小型的苏门答腊犀牛，体重也接近1000公斤了。
And they can live for a long time!
它们的寿命很长！
In the wild, a rhino can live between 45 and 50 years old.
在野生环境下，犀牛的寿命在45到50年之间。
Rhinoceroses are also herbivores, which means they only eat plants, like fruits and grass.
犀牛是食草动物，这意味着它们只吃水果或草之类的植物。
Some rhinos even knock down whole trees, so they can get to the leaves and twigs at the top.
有些犀牛甚至撞倒整棵树，只为吃到其顶部的树叶和树枝。
What's another thing that all rhinos have in common?

Here's a hint: it's pretty easy to see when you look at them.

That's right, Squeaks! They all have those big horns on their noses.

Rhinoceros horns are made of a material called keratin, which is the same stuff that your hair and fingernails are made of!

Some rhinos, like the black rhino, have two horns, and some, like the Javan rhino, have one.
一些犀牛如黑犀牛有两个角，有些犀牛如爪哇犀牛，有一个角。
Rhinos use their horns to protect their babies from predators
犀牛角用来保护自己的孩子免受捕食者的伤害，
and to defend their territory, or the place where they live, from other rhinoceroses.

Most types of rhinos live alone or with their babies, which we called calves, and each rhino has its own territory.
大多数类型的犀牛都是独居或与它们的宝宝(calves)一起生活，每头犀牛都有自己的领地。
And they mark the edges of their territory in a fun way: with their poop!
它们标记领地边缘的方法很有趣：用粪便标记！
A rhino will pick a few places around the outside of their territory where they will always go to poop.

And when they're done, the rhino will kick the poop around, spreading a smell in the air that tells other rhinos to stay away!

There's one more thing that most rhinos have in common:

almost all types of rhinos are endangered, meaning that there aren't a lot of them left.

There are only about 50 Javan rhinos left, and they all live in one small part of Indonesia.
现在只剩下大约50只爪哇犀牛了，它们都生活在印尼的一小部分地区。
Someday, most types of rhinos might go extinct, meaning there won't be any alive at all.
可能有一天，世界上大多数类型的犀牛都会灭亡，不会再有活犀牛了。
Other animals don't really attack rhinoceroses, but they're still in danger for two main reasons.
其他动物并没有真正攻击犀牛，但因为两个主要原因，它们仍然处于危险之中。
One reason is that they don't have as many places to live anymore,

because people keep destroying the habitat where they used to live.

Another problem is that some people hunt and kill rhinos because their horns are worth a lot of money.

But a lot of people are trying to help the rhinos in different ways,

like making it illegal to hunt them and protecting the places where they live.

And in some places, it's working!

Black and Indian rhino populations are slowly growing again.

But for other types of rhinos, like the Javan rhino, there's still lots of work to do if we want to keep these amazing animals around.

And the best way that you can help is to learn as much as you can about them.
