Squeaks and I are adopting a pet goldfish!
我和吱吱养了一条金鱼。
He lives in a fish tank, and he's a great swimmer!
它在鱼缸里生活，是个游泳健将。
In fact, this little guy's whole body is really suited to life in the water.
事实上，这个小家伙的整个身体都挺适应水中生活的。
He has great fins to help him swim, and eyes that can stay open in the water.
它的巨大鱼鳍能帮它游泳，它的眼睛在水里能睁着。
These special body parts help him to live in his underwater home, so we call them adaptations.
这些特殊的身体结构能帮它在水里生活，我们称之为适应性。
There's one adaptation that's really important for our new fish friend to survive in a fish tank or pond.
我们的新朋友要想在鱼缸或池塘中生存下来，有一种适应性非常重要。
He needs to be able to breathe underwater.
它要能够在水下呼吸。
People can't breathe underwater because there's no air.
人类不能在水下呼吸是因为那里没有空气。
We have to hold our breath, or use special equipment like scuba gear to get air.
我们只能憋气或使用水中呼吸装置之类的特殊设备来获取空气。
But our goldfish isn't holding his breath, and he didn't bring scuba gear!
但我们的金鱼既不用憋气，也没携带水中呼吸装置。
Instead of breathing air, he actually breathes water.
它呼吸的不是空气，而是水。
Humans, fish, and all kinds of other animals have to breathe for the same reason: we all need something called oxygen.
人类、鱼类和所有种类的其他动物呼吸只为一个相同的原因：我们需要氧气。
Even though air might not seem like it's made of anything,
空气看起来不含任何物质，
it's actually made up of lots of tiny things called molecules that are way too small for you to see.
但实际上，它是由很多肉眼看不到的小分子构成的。
Oxygen is one of the ingredients in air, and it's really important, bacause it helps your body make energy!
氧气是空气的一种成分，它很重要，因为它能帮助我们的身体制造能量。
You need oxygen to break down your food, move your muscles, and even just to think with your brain.
我们需要氧气来分解食物、做肌肉运动和思考。
There's oxygen in air, but you need it to get into and all around your whole body!
氧气在空气中，你需要将它吸入到你的身体里，到达全身各处。
So, you have special organs called lungs to help get that oxygen.
所以你需要有个叫做肺的特殊器官来辅助获得氧气。
When you breathe in, you can feel your lungs expand full of air, just like a balloon.
当你吸气时，你感觉到肺扩张，里面充满了空气，就像气球一样。
Once they're full of air, your lungs pull the oxygen that you need out of the air before you breathe out.
一旦空气满了，肺会在呼气前把你需要的氧气剥离出来。
That oxygen goes into your blood and travels all throughout your body.

There's air all around us, so as long as you we breathe, you can get oxygen.

Land animals can have all different shapes and sizes of lungs,

but animals that live underwater, like fish, need oxygen, too!
但水下的动物，如鱼类，也需要氧气。
Fish don't have lungs, and there isn't any air around them.
鱼类没有肺，周围也没有任何空气。
Animals like our goldfish need to use another way to get their oxygen.
像金鱼这样的动物需要另辟蹊径来获得氧气。
And guess what? Water is full of oxygen, just like the air is!
你猜怎么着？水就像空气一样，也含氧气。
So fish can get their oxygen straight from the water they live in.
所以鱼类能直接从它们生活的水里获得氧气。
They just need an adaptation to get the oxygen out of the water.
它们需要一种适应性来获得水中的氧气。
Instead of lungs, most underwater creatures have another special body part
大部分水下生物有另一种特殊的身体结构来替代肺，
that allows them to pull oxygen straight out of the water, called their gills.
它叫做鱼鳃，能使水下生物直接从水中获得氧气。
Gills look like little slits on either side of a fish's face.
鱼鳃在鱼头的两边，看起来像条小缝儿。
A fish's gills work a lot like our lungs.
鱼鳃的作用很像肺。
When a fish pulls in water through its mouth, the water goes back out through its gills.
当鱼从嘴里吸入水之后，水会从鱼鳃中流出去。
As the water runs through the gills, it goes right past the fish's blood.
由于水要流经鱼鳃，它会直接流经鱼的血液。
The oxygen in the water flows into the fish's blood, and now the fish can use the oxygen all over its body!
水中的氧气进入鱼的血液里，那么鱼就能用全身的氧气了。
The fish is basically breathing water with gills, instead of air with lungs.
鱼基本上用腮呼吸水，而不是用肺呼吸空气。
Other types of animals besides fish use gills, too.
除了鱼，其他种类的动物也会用鳃呼吸。
Crabs, lobsters, snails, and even some bugs use gills to breathe!
螃蟹、龙虾、蜗牛，甚至一些虫子都用鳃呼吸。
So, even though we both have very different ways of getting it, our goldfish needs oxygen just like I do.
尽管我们的呼吸方式不一样，但金鱼和我一样都需要氧气。
Isn't that right, little fish?
