The Nobel prize for medicine was awarded to Yoshinori Ohsumi for his work on a process known as autophagy, which involves degrading and recycling bits of cells. The prize committee said the Japanese scientist’s experiments “led to a new paradigm in our understanding of how the cell recycles its content”.
