NAJIP ALI, TV PERSONALITY
Back in the old days, all the Arabs and theIndians and the Javanese and the Boyanese and the Malays came here. I mean,Singapore changed very fast, but this place hasn't changed a lot. It's really, really diverse. We have the Arabs with the shisha, we have the Malays who arestill doing the nasi padang and the nasi goreng. You know, it's a melting pot4of a lot of things.
OK, although this is where it seems to be abit conventional, conservative you'd be surprised what's on the other side ofthis street, which is called the Haji Lane. It has evolved to something veryinteresting. Come.
So this whole lane has been taken over byyoung hip entrepreneur[s], You can be in Harajuku, for example. You can be inShibuya, for example. And this is what I'm very proud of, and so it's a goodplace to come over.
CHARLENE FANG, CNNGO SINGAPORE EDITOR
Hi, I'm Charlene, CNNGo Singapore cityeditor and about to take you up to Lantern at the Fullerton Bay Hotel. Waittill you see the view when the doors open. As you can tell, it's a stunninglocation. The bar's just open about a month, and right now it's pretty much theplace to be. Everyone likes to come here for sunset cocktails just to enjoy theview.
In the distance you can see Marina BaySands, and we're gonna head there next. It's pretty much the best view thatyou're gonna get of Singapore right now. The pool is stunning. It's open to thepublic. The pool, however, is just for hotel guests. So, I think a lot ofpeople are gonna start booking rooms here just so that they can take a look atthis.
LEE KIN MUN, AKA "MR8ROWN, "BLOGGER
My name is Kin Mun, but everyone calls meBrown. So, the Henderson Wave[s] Bridge is 274 meters across and it connectstwo hills. One is Telok Blangah Hill. The other one is Mount Faber. And look atthe view.
I think we have gotten very new, you know?We tear down old buildings at the drop of a hat, replacing them with thingslike car parks and food courts. Occasionally, we do something right, like builda nice bridge like that to get people back in touch with nature. I like livingin a modern city, but I like to have something to show my kids when they growup. I think Singapore has the potential to be very creative. The people arecreative, but I think the authorities are still not. I see some trying to cometo grips with the messiness that comes with creativity.
Hello, monkeys!
LESLIE TAY, FOOD BLOGGER
This is Hokkien prawn noodles or Hokkienfried noodles, and it's a very Singaporean dish because this is [the] onlyplace in the world you get this style of fried prawn noodles.
A hawker is someone that hawks the foodalong the street. When Singapore was in the early days, we weren't sodeveloped, so all this food was basically on the streets. The governmentdecided that, hey, it's not very hygienic to sell food on the street, so theystarted to house all these hawkers into hawker centers. And this is ourneighborhood pub, you know. This is the place where after work people come, order something to eat, order something to drink before they go home.
DICK LEE, SINGER AND PRODUCER
Well, this is the Blair Plain area, whichis of... in Tanjong Pagar, a beautiful old part of Singapore. I'm a Peranakan, sothis is very typical of Peranakan neighborhoods. The Peranakans were the firstChinese who came into 5ingapore a few hundred years ago. And the men came fromChina; they intermarried16 with Malays, and then the first generation was bornas Chinese-Malay mix.
So this is Baba House, a beautiful, restored Peranakan shop house, Chinese shop house, restored in the style of howit was in the 1930s when a prominent businessman lived here. This is really howmost... a lot of Singapore lived a hundred years ago. I think Singapore has toremember its history, its heritage. It has evolved and matured in a verymodern, cosmopolitan way. I think that the mix of people that are coming inhere is really changing the landscape.20 We are such a small island, so we makethe most of what we have. I think that is to me one of the strengths of5ingapore-making something out of nothing, and I guess it's done very well foritself.
