The other summit. So much has been made this week about meetings among heads of states. Tonight we focus on 2 women. 2 leaders in their own right embracing one another as much as the rest of the world seem to be embracing them.
The highly anticipated meeting of the 2 most fashionable first ladies was sealed with a kiss. Carla Bruni Sarkozy skipped the G20 meeting in London this week waiting to meet Michele Obama on her own turf and leaving many to wonder if she feared being overshadowed by the new girl on the world stage.
They both represent, I think, a familism modority and strenghth that we havent seen. You know something like this and especially 2 women like this, in such a long time.
Their backgrounds are night and day. Ms Obama grew up on the south side of Chicago, studied in Princeton and Havard before meeting the man who would become her husband and later the president. Ms Sarkozy is a runway model turned singer turned fist lady who wed the french president just months after his second divorce. But being married to 2 of the most powerful men in the world gives them a lot in common. " apparently it's a quite sisterhood. A first-lady is really something to get together with the wives of other heads of state.
The first-ladies ad say she and Ms Sarkozy enjoyed each other's company. they had a lively lunch, great conversation and seemed to genuinely like each other. But first ladies don't always get along. the women's relationship mirrored that of their 2 countries of the height of the cold war. Ms Obama has been exceptionally friendly on her European tour, embracing the other wives often exchangnng hug instead of handshakes. She and Ms Sarkozy hearted the way they met. 2 kisses from 2 very closely followed first ladies.
