The provincewas named after Princess Louis Caroline Alberta, a daughter ofQueen Victoria of England. It becameaprovince of Canadain 1905.

Others came from Austria, Russia and theScandinavian countries.Asonly a small number were French Canadians,whomigratedtoAlbertafromthe eastern part of Canada, themajor languagespokenin the province is English, with the exception of a few bilingual towns north of Edmonton.Althoughthere are onlya limited number ofIndianslivingon reservationsnow, two hundred years ago theywere the only inhabitantsin whatis nowcalled Alberta.

In the northern part,likethe Indianswholived there before them, the hunters trap suchfur-bearing animals as squirrels,beavers and foxes. Albertais also rich inforest resources, coal and oil. It is one of themain timber producingprovinces in Canada. Owing to its rich deposit in oil, petroleumindustryhas become one of the mostimportant industries of the province,withmany oil fields andrefineries. Alberta also producesmorecoal than any other province.

5. The provincial capital Edmonton, with a population of about 1,016,000, isthe second largest city in the province. The largest city is Calgary. In 1967, ithad a population of about 330,000. Butaftera lapse of 40 years (2007), it now has more than1,060,000 inhabitants. The third largest city is Lethbridge,havinga population of about 67,000 persons. People in those cities work inmeat-packing plants, flour mills, dairies and refineries.Somework in canneries and beet-sugar factories.

Although the best season for traveling isthe summer months of June, July andAugust, many touristsareattracted tothe first rate skiing groundat theresorts of Banff and Jasper.
