The Princess Can't Laugh

Based on an Irish Fairy Tale Retold by Judy Veramendi

1.Yesterday Princess Eva was happy.

She went to a carnival.The weather was sunny,

and the food was delicious.

There were clowns and a band.

But there was a bad magician at the carnival.

2.Princess Eva saw the magician and she laughed.

The magician didn't laugh.He touched her mouth with a wand.

He said,"From now on,you can't talk.you can't laugh."

And Princess Eva couldn't make a sound.

3.Princess Eva could feel,and hear,and see,and smell,and taste.

But she couldn't talk.She couldn't laugh.

A doctor came and looked at her fingers,

her ears,her eyes,her nose,and her tongue.She wasn't sick.

But something was wrong.Even a clown couldn't make her laugh!

4.But then one day,a nice man came to town.He had a band of animals.

His dog,his cat,and his horse sang for the princess.

They made loud noises.They sounded bad!

The princess started to laugh and laugh.

"Look!I can laugh!I can talk!"She cried.It was a happy day.
