Hello! This week on Ask a Teacher, we answer a question from Aaron Ali in Sudan about how to become a fluent speaker.

Dear Teacher, I have been learning English since 2010, but I can't speak English fluently, even now.

To help you reach your goal, consider the following two questions:

1. What is making it difficult for you to become fluent?

2. Are you getting the input and practice with English that you need?
你是否有足够的英语输入和练习？
Input means the language you listen to and read.

Being fluent does not mean speaking a language without any mistakes.
口语流利并不是说讲英语的时候不出任何错误。
Instead, fluency is the ability to speak without stopping too much.
相反，流利是指说话时不停顿太多的能力。
It is also the ability to speak about a large number of issues.
也是指能谈论很多问题的能力。
Try to identify what is preventing you from being fluent.
请试着找出是什么让你无法流利地说英语。
Maybe you worry about making grammar mistakes.
也许是你担心会犯语法错误。
Maybe pronunciation problems slow you down.
也许是发音问题让你语速慢下来。
Perhaps you simply might not know enough words.

Or, you might need more confidence, or belief in yourself.

People generally need two things to become fluent.

The first thing they need is to know a lot of words and expressions.

You should listen to and read English that you can mostly understand but that also helps you learn a few new expressions at a time.
你应该听和读那种你能大部分理解，但同时也能帮助你学习一些新的表达方式的英语材料。
Remember, you can be fluent even if you make many grammar mistakes.
请记住，就算你犯了很多语法错误，你也可以很流利地说英语。
But you cannot speak fluently if you do not know enough words and expressions.
但是如果你不知道足够多的单词和短语，你就不能流利地说。
The second thing learners need is a lot of practice speaking in different kinds of situations.
学习者需要的第二件事是在不同的情境下进行大量的口语练习。
Try to find an English-speaking partner and practice often.

Online sites can help you find a language partner.
在线网站可以帮助你找到语言伙伴。
You can have a conversation with this person over a mobile phone or computer.

Practice speaking about particular topics.

For example, if you are interested in health and exercise, learn the words and expressions connected to that topic.

Next, try to write about it.

Writing can help you organize your ideas and remember vocabulary.

Storytelling is another way to practice.

It helps you learn expressions and grammatical forms.

That will help you feel what it is like to speak fluently.
