再过不到半个小时，这些飞行员就要和全世界各国的飞行员一起展开一场被称为人类历史上最大的一次空战。这样的时刻，We can't be consumed by our petty differences any more. Consume，消费，消耗。Be consumed by因为某事消耗。这里，消耗人类力量的原因被归结为petty differences。Petty，琐碎的，心胸狭窄的。比如，Don't bother me with such petty things.
不要用这种小事情烦我。
这句话中用到了any more这一短语。它与后面the 4th of July will no longer be known as an American holiday中的no longer都表示“不再”。比如：The deadline is drawing near; we can't delay any more. 限期快到了，不能再拖延。再比如：We are a people no longer subject to foreign rule. 我们是一个不再受外国统治的民族。
危机之时，common interest将会让人类团结起来。Common interest，共同利益。比如：The two parties were linked together by common interest. 两个党派被共同的利益联系在一起。
电影中，决战之日碰巧是美国的国庆七月四日，所以这位总统大人说perhaps it's fate that today is the 4th of July. It's fate that... 什么什么是命中注定的。再来看一个例子。Maybe it's fate that we meet each oher. 可能是上帝的安排让我们遇见。
And should we win the day, the 4th of July will no longer be known as an American holiday. 大家都知道，这是战前的演讲，结果还未知，所以，本句属于假设，虚拟。英语中，当虚拟条件句的谓语动词含有were, should, had时，if可以省略，这时条件从句一般用倒装语序，也就是把were, should, had等词放在句首，但这种情况多用于比较正式的场合。再比如：Should he agree to go there, we would send him there. 要是他答应去的话，我们就派他去。Were she here, she would agree with us. 如果她在这儿的话，她会同意我们的。 这两句话都属于这种情况。
