140.The Loss of Scruffy
140.斯库菲失踪了
When Carl left his dog, Scruffy, alone with his brother, Greg, for a moment in the park, Scruffy took off! Carl was so angry.
当卡尔让他的狗斯库菲与他的弟弟格雷格在公园里独自呆一会儿的时候，斯库菲突然跑了！卡尔非常生气。
He knew that he should never have left something up to Greg!
他知道他压根儿就不应该让格雷格决定任何事情！
Now Carl had to find Scruffy and he would leave no stone unturned.
现在卡尔得找到斯库菲，他准备千方百计也要把它找到。
Scruffy didn't leave behind an easy trail. Once he was out of the park and in the city it was as if no one ever saw him again.
斯库菲没有留下明显的痕迹。一离开公园，进到城里，好像就没有人再见过它。
The efforts of the animal control center left much to be desired, however, so Carl left for the streets on his own!
而动物管理中心所做的努力又不尽人意，因此卡尔自己去大街上找去了。
Greg knew that he had to help, even though Carl left him out of his plan to find Scruffy.
格雷格知道他得帮忙，尽管卡尔寻找斯库菲的计划中没有安排他什么事。
But Greg couldn't let it be, he started looking as well. They both looked everywhere.
但格雷格不能就这样呆着，他也开始找了起来。他们俩到处都找遍了。
When they bumped into each other the next day in front of the lecture hall Carl yelled at Greg again for helping.
第二天他们在讲座大厅前偶然相遇时，卡尔又对格雷格吼了起来，说他多管闲事。
"Just leave well enough alone, okay? I'll find him myself. Scruffy would probably hide from you anyhow!"
"不要帮倒忙，行吗？我自己会找到的。斯库菲可能见你就躲哩！"
But it was Greg who finally found Scruffy. He was left on the doorstep of a Catholic Church.
但是最后还是格雷格找到了斯库菲。它被人扔在了一座天主教堂的台阶上。
Someone had obviously been beating on Scruffy and he was left for dead.
很显然它被人打了，最后被认为已死而被丢弃。
All that was left over of Scruffy's former nice fur was a bare patch on his back! It was sad!
斯库菲原来的毛漂亮极了，现在背上只剩下光秃秃的一片。这太让人伤心啦！
"Leave him alone!" Carl cried when he finally saw Scruffy. "Were there any witnesses when you got here?" he asked.
"别碰它！"看到斯库菲卡尔喊道。"你到的时候这里有任何证人吗？" 他问道。
"No one!" Greg said. "But I'll leave some contact information around in case anyone wants to call!"
"一个也没有！"格雷格说。"不过我会留下一些联系方式以备有人打电话！"
But no one ever did. Scruffy died the next day!
可是没有一个人打电话。斯库菲第二天就死了！
