FTC, states sue Amazon for anti-competitive practices
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), in conjunction with attorneys general from 17 states, filed an antitrust lawsuit against Amazon on Tuesday. The lawsuit alleges that the tech giant has leveraged its dominant market position to inflate product prices and stifle competition.
Amazon, the largest e-commerce platform in America, also holds a dominant position in the field of cloud computing. Its influence extends further into areas such as groceries and healthcare.
The FTC alleges that Amazon's third-party e-commerce business engages in anti-competitive practices.
For instance, it forces sellers to purchase Amazon's advertising and delivery services, with fees for such services accounting for approximately 50 percent of a seller's income.
Additionally, when Amazon finds that a seller's products are priced lower on other platforms, it blocks those seller's products on the Amazon website, the FTC says.
It is the third lawsuit brought against Amazon by the FTC this year. Previously, the FTC accused Amazon of enticing consumers to sign up for membership, illegally collecting children's data through the voice assistant Alexa, and engaging in illegal surveillance of users through the doorbell product Ring.
