On the morning of June 29, a KFC Zinger sandwich was launched from the ground in Page, Arizona. It traveled to the edge of space, or our stratosphere, in a high-altitude balloon vehicle made by the for-profit space technology company, World View, Space.com reported. The chicken flew at a speed of 1,000 feet per minute for the mission, which was called Zinger-1.
Naturally, the stunt was all in the name of an advertising campaign for KFC that’s goal is to reach new heights (get it?). Another part of the campaign includes dropping a coupon from the balloon down to Earth. (What if it lands in the water?)
“This is the greatest achievement in chicken sandwich space travel history," the announcer of the livestream said. "In all my years in this business, I've certainly never seen anything like it. What a time to be alive.”
The sandwich will be lingering for about four days at an altitude range of 50,000 to 80,000 feet.
Eventually, World View wants to send humans up to the border of space for tourism purposes. At least we know it can already carry lunch.
World View
