Online voting kicked off on October 1st to select China's grassroots heroes or "Good Samaritans" for the third quarter of 2013.

Initiated and sponsored by Xinhua News Agency, netizens can vote for their favorites online or via microblogs and mobile applications.

评选将从20位候选人中选出10位主要事迹在道德和社会领域引起过广泛关注的网络人物。

陕西省28年治沙73000公顷“逐梦大漠”的牛玉琴，即是候选人之一。

文中的grassroots heroes就是“草根英雄”的意思。其中，grassroots指“基层的，一般民众的”，grassroots leaders即“基层领导”。此外，good Samaritans原指“好心人、乐善好施者”，在文中也可以指“草根英雄”。Samaritans原指“撒玛利亚人”，曾在典故中指“好人”，后来就成为了好人的代名词。
