Jesse D. Examples of plans gone awry can also be seen through history. At the beginning of WWI, the German army developed a plan that they thought to be smart, quick and effective. The Schlieffen plan, which was formulated by German General Alfred Von Schlieffen, proposed knocking out France first with a lightening attack through neutral Belgium before turning on Russia. The plan, which seemed foolproof, failed as the Germans faced a surprise when the Belgians defended their homeland. This slowed the Germans down and lead to their loss against the French--and the eventual loss of the war.
