教案:
Let’s start with some slang. Do you know what it means to get your feet wet?
让我们从俚语开始吧。你知道get your feet wet是什么意思吗
It can also mean something else. Getting your feet wet means to start learning an activity.
它也有别的意思。Get your feet wet的意思是你去开始学习一件事情
For example, if you want to learn how to swim, you might get your feet wet taking a beginner’s class.
例如,如果你想学游泳,你可以开始去上个入门课
See? It kind of makes sense because before you jump into the pool to go swimming,
看,其实是有些道理的,在跳入游泳池之前
you want to dip your toes in the water and see what it’s like. So that’s what getting your feet wet means.
你想去把自己的脚指头放在水里,所以这就是get your feet wet的意思
There’s another slang we have that uses the word “wet”. It is called “wet blanket”.
另外一个用wet这个词的俚语是wet blanket
A wet blanket isn’t just a blanket that’s got some water on it. It’s talking about a person, specifically a person who is kind of a party pooper.
Wet blanket的意思不仅仅是潮湿的被子。它是关于人的,尤其是关于一个令人扫兴的人
There’s someone who likes to sort of not excited about other people’s achievements or doesn’t like
to have fun.有些人对别人的成就不感兴趣,也对好玩的事情不感冒
So wet blanket makes everyone sad, just like you would be sad if you were wearing a wet blanket.
Wet blanket会让人沮丧,就像当你披着一个潮湿的被子的时候一样
Just you are uncomfortable, you can’t have fun. An example of how to use wet blanket is this sentence.
你感觉不太舒服。这个俚语可以这样用
“I wanted to celebrate my last day of work with Cheryl, but she’s such a wet blanket, I don’t think it’ll be very fun at all.”
我想和谢丽尔庆祝一下我工作的最后一天,但是她很令人沮丧,我不觉得这会很有意思
See? I just called Cheryl a wet blanket, so people know that I don’t think she likes to have fun.
看到了吧,我把谢丽尔叫做一个wet blanket,大家都知道我觉得她没意思
So those are our slangs for today. Getting your feet wet and wet blanket.
这就是我们今天的俚语,getting your feet wet和wet blanket
Now let’s talk about sentence structure. Here is our first example.
现在让我们来讲句型。这里是我们第一个例子
“Going to the theatre to watch a movie is more trouble than its worth.”
去电影院看电影不太值得
“A is more trouble than its worth.”
A不太值得
Basically, you are saying that the benefit you get from doing A is less than how much effort it takes to
make A happen.
就是说做A这件事所得到的好处小于所需要实现A的精力
Here are some more examples that might help. “Making my own bread is more trouble than its
worth.”
这里还有更多的例子 “做我自己的面包不太值得”
It’s nice to have home-made bread, but it takes a long time and a lot of effort to make it happen. So
it’s more trouble than its worth.
能有自己做的面包很不错,但是需要很长时间和很多精力,所以不太值得
And here’s one last example, “Living where you work is more trouble than its worth.” Why don’t you try making a sentence with this structure?
我们最后一个例子,“住在你工作的地方不太值得”。你也来试试造句吧
Can you think of anything that’s a lot of work and really isn’t worth it? That’s when you would use this sentence.
你能想到任何需要很多精力并且不值得的事情吗?这就是你可以用这个句子的时候
Alright, now let’s talk about etymology. We have a fun one for you today. Sinu.
好了,现在让我们来讲词源。我们今天有一个有趣的,sinu
In Latin, it means curve, winding, or hollow. One word that uses this root is “insinuate”.
在拉丁语里,它的意思是弯曲的,蜿蜒的,空的。一个用这个词根的词是insinuate
If you are insinuating something, you are hinting at something that you’d rather not talk about directly.
如果你insinuate,你在拐弯抹角的说一些事
And you can see from the word sinu, you are curving around what you want to talk about.
你可以从sinu中看到,你在围绕着想说的话
For example, if I have a roommate who snores, I might not say, you snore.
如果我有一个打呼噜的室友,我也许不会说,你打呼噜
I might say, oh you know, sometimes it’s hard to sleep because of the noise,
我可以说,有的时候因为噪音会比较难入睡。
hmm…it’s a lot of things that are causing noise, cars outside, and sometimes when you breathe it’s a little loud.
很多东西都可以制造噪音,例如外面的车辆,有的时候你的呼吸也有点大声
See? I was insinuating that the snoring was bothering me but I did not talk about it directly. I curved around. Insinuate.
看到了吧,我在拐弯抹角的说呼噜声打扰我,但是没有直说。
And you can also say something is sinuous, for example, snakes. They are very graceful and curvy.
你也可以说某物是很蜿蜒的,例如蛇。它们很优雅,很弯曲
You can also say when someone is dancing that they are very sinuous. Their movements are very graceful.
你也可以说一个人跳舞的时候很sinuous。她们的动作非常优雅
And one a little more surprising is sinus. Because sinu doesn’t just mean curving, it also means hollow.
一个有些令人惊讶的词是sinus。因为sinu不仅仅有弯曲的意思,也有空的意思
Your sinus is this air pocket in your face. It is a hollow part in your head where air is kept.
你的静脉窦是在脸上的气穴。是一个储存空气的地方
You might notice it getting swollen when you have a cold, and that is called sinus inflammation. So that is our etymology for today.
你感冒的时候可能会注意到它肿,这个叫做鼻窦炎。这就是我们今天的词源
I hope you liked the lesson, and that you learned something.
我希望你喜欢今天的课程并且学到了一些东西
