在美国口语中可以表示学校的班级舞会。
eg:On the night of the prom the seniors were on a cloud. 举行学生舞会的晚上,四年级学生都兴高采列。
2.invite
invite sb to some place邀请某人去...
eg:Jake invites me to his house this Friday.
invite还有名词性质,解释为“邀请函”。
eg:He has got an invite to the fashion show.
invite还有招致,引起的意思。
His carelessness invited this bad result.
3.go with
a.伴随
Happiness doesn't necessarily go with money.
b.与...相配
Do you think this hat would go with my new dress?
c.与...约会
He goes with the girl every week.
学生们在星期六晚上要去参加一个舞会。
[误] The students are going to a dance party on Saturday night.
[正] The students are going to a dance on Saturday night.
Notice:舞会应该说dancing party,不要说dance party,但一般只说dance也就够了。
开舞会就说give a dance,
去参加舞会就说go to a dance。
那旅馆每晚举行舞会:At the hotel dances are held nightly.
我第一次遇见她是在一个舞会上:She and I first met at a dance.
他们请我参加舞会:They asked me to a dance.
规模较大的舞会,英语又可说ball,是从拉丁文来的。
