To break up means to to end up a partnership of some kind, often a romantic relationship. 译为：分手，结束婚姻或者恋情。表示和某人分手，在短语的后面用上介词with，即：break up with someone。此外，注意break的过去式是broke，过去分词是broken。这个短语变异为break-up，这时候就是名词了。

我们通过几个例句来熟悉它的意思和用法：

例句1：I was so sad to hear of Mara and John's breakup—I thought those two would be together forever.（听到Mara和John分手，我万分伤心，我以为他们会永远在一起。）

解析：hear of是动词短语，意思是“听说，得知，获悉”。例如：I was shocked to hear of his poor death.（听到他惨遭不幸的噩耗, 我十分震惊。）I am much surprised to hear of his failure.（我听到他失败的事感到吃惊。）
