on tenterhooks 焦虑不安

【讲解】

此语源于织布。从前在英国，布织好了之后，在一种叫tenter的框架上用很多钩子把它绑紧，以显得平整。如果人在这种框架上，再把钩子拉紧，即使不死也很受罪，所以，这条成语比喻“内心焦虑不安”。它出现于1533年。
